Not my taste at all. Which is why I appreciate its perfection in details so much.

Absolutely lovely.

I do use a kind of sofrito for vegetarian beans (black/red/whichever) and never knew it was called that!

It's usually chopped onion, 1 red & 1 green pepper, possibly a chopped jalapeno sauteed on the stove. Don't usually bother with herbs -- probably would if I had a garden.

Who knew!

@lauriebird I have #1 and LOVE it too. Very easy to clean, flexible layout, holds a ton of stuff. I'm ready to replace it after 3 years (though not strictly necessary, it's nice to indulge in new plastic now & again) and at the price and ease of use, it's a no-brainer.

Second @crystalj that @talby should re-write this post. Another thing the author doesn't say: are these taken with a full-frame DSLR (eg Canon 5DMkII or Nikon D700) or crop factor (most everything else)? Related, are the lenses designed for full-frame cameras or crop-factor cameras?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_factor

This isn't some picky academic quibble. It's a very big factor in why there is as much or little slice of the world depicted in the photos above.

It's fine to do a short post that doesn't cover everything, but you have to let people know what you're leaving out! (Either tell people you'll be covering X in a future post, or provide links to others' material.) Otherwise, the entire thing is more misleading and confusing than helpful.

I'm restraining myself from using all caps in this message... Thank You!! for posting this recipe. It's one of my faves, and I always feel guilty spending the $ for one when I work from home and could easily make it myself - but how would I do that? Well now, thanks to your efforts to recreate this, I'll be able to produce them myself. Much appreciated!

I've been thinking about just this issue lately!

I live in an older apartment with lots of charm, but every so often I notice when I walk through the door that it smells like a mouse died within the walls. It'll smell like this for a week or so, then drift away for many weeks, then return. I have no idea why I have sourced the smell to dead mouse: it's really just a made-up idea to explain the source.

At some point I'll stop in the doorway and just won't be able to take it. Then I'll go into a frenzy of laundering, vacuuming, dusting, using Trader Joe's household cleaner on everything, simmer aromatics in water on the stove: the works. Doesn't really work though!

I recently went through a round of listing a bunch of stuff on Craigslist and did feel something scammy was afoot with some of the responses - basically the "distant buyer" scam. I was wondering when that whole type of scam started since I'll go through a spate where I list a bunch of stuff and that had never happened before. I thought, Do other people know about this type of scam? I can put up warnings for whoever reads my FB page, but that doesn't travel very far.

So thanks AT for such a detailed post with useful consumer info. And thanks to the commenters for your stories!

I grew up eating lasagna made with cottage cheese mixed with a bit of parmesan, an egg, and dried parsley for the cheesy white layer. Not only does it cut down the richness, but it holds together better (hey, the egg) than ricotta, so the layers don't slide about. Everyone I've made it for has raved about it. Think it came from one of the 70s Better Homes & Gardens red-checker-tablecloths cookbooks.

Also consider this, from CB2: http://www.cb2.com/dining-tables/furniture/odyssey-white-dining-table/f1963

$199. Comes in white plus occasional seasonal colors (right now the 2nd color is grellow).

This table gets good reviews. I don't have one but wish I'd bought instead of the terminally wobbly Docksta from Ikea.

These extreme couponers might want to adopt a "good enough" philosophy. Do something a bit more efficiently/save a bit of money, and move on.

Those glass-carrier suction cup shelves in the bathroom are the best! A great solution to a problem, yet so cool they make the original obstacle look desirable.

@Chenell - exactly. People are making statements about values without acknowledging they are. So we small-space dwellers get "helpful" (read: passive-aggressive) suggestions and questions that are actually expressions of discomfort with our not aligning with suburban values.

I find it amusing to have these conversations, because so many of my choices go against the grain of suburban/strivers' expectations. No, instead of getting married, having kids, moving up the career ladder, driving a nice car, buying a nice suburban house -- I have a Vespa, write & paint instead of having a real job, and play folk music on my banjo. So having a small apartment fits whatever image of irritating urban hipster my cumulative lifestyle choices conjures up. Judge away! :)

1. I have a Roku player and I love it. (Same concept as @jmorey's comment above, different option.) Video quality same as DVD (which I did not find streaming videos on computer), functional remote, very fast navigation through Watch Instantly queue. Can't recommend highly enough if you don't want to get a dual-purpose machine (Wii, DVD player with that capability, etc.).

2. FeedFlix is an app with both free and pay versions (I think the annual fee is like $9) that allows you to get max value out of your Netflix subscription. The free version can download your Netflix data once/week (pay version has instant-update frequency + more functionality) and it'll show, among other data, your cost per movie with DVD only and including WI movies and how it compares with other users. Great app avail on web.

Seconding @vicsiris: I recognized this style immediately from the last house tour.
@ebrown clearly remembers it as well.

While some of the basic elements are the same, it's very interesting that he can move (albeit to similar type of space - in the same building) and yet maintain the same overall look and feel.

That tells me he is in control of his choices: that the layouts, lighting, arrangement, and overall mood are so strikingly similar says he knows what his objective is and can re-create it at will.

I never thought of my space this way before: forget comparison from previous to current space. My apartment doesn't look like the same person decorated all the rooms! (When I did, all at the same time.) Ha!

So I salute Bryan's discipline of vision.

I had a studio for many years, and moved into a 1BR with only about 100 more SF but excellent storage/layout. This was desperately necessary for me in this way: I didn't feel like I could possibly ever live the life I was meant to in the previous space.

Is this true for you? Consider whether you will experience such a lift, such an expanded sense of possibilities in a new space that you will be inspired to do things you might not otherwise? That you'll feel that extra boost to start a business on the side, tackle those creative projects that you've been mulling for awhile, etc.

If you think that's you, that you'll do more with your time and live more intensely because you're in a space that suits you better, go for it. Otherwise, I'd hold off.
