Ohhh one of the many, many reasons I love living in Chicago... the architecture. That apartment is awesome. I LOVE the lanterns above the table. Well done!

I may have completely missed it but I didn't see throw pillows from Room and Board on here. They are definitely not inexpensive but the fabrics they use are gorgeous and they're very well made. Love them, love them, love them. :)

My one cat does that when he's either bored or irritated with me (usually after I refuse to turn the sink on for him to drink out of) If I see him do it (he likes to stare at me while he TPs my bathroom) I pick him up and bring him to his scratching mat to (try to) teach him where he SHOULD be scratching. Aside from that, I make certain he always has access to toys and other things to keep him entertained in addition to paying him specific attention for certain periods of the day. That seems to have helped! Good luck!

Such a cute picture!

I recently had to drive about 13 hours with my two cats, both of which have issues with UTIs and can't be enclosed without a litter box for long periods of time. Crazy as it sounds, I got a pet gate for the back of my car and gave them the freedom to move around as much as they want. I laid down a cover on the floor, set out their blankets, some food and water and a small litter box and, sure enough, they were quiet most of the trip... except for the occasional instances where I would hear the scratching of the litter box :) I'm moving back up to Chicago next month (another 8 hour drive) and plan on doing the same thing. Might sound crazy to have a litter box in the car but it saved me hundreds in vet bills by avoiding any issues :)

Getting to the destination, I pretty much do what everyone else mentioned. Put out their food and water right away, their litter box, toys and give them lots of lovies to make sure they were comfortable.

Great photos... I don't necessarily know that I would incorporate all of them in my apartment there are several that I love. I just painted one of my rooms a fantastic grey and llllove it. :)

I agree with arranging the furniture and pulling in favorite items, etc. If you really want a focal point, another option, other than a fireplace is using one of those kits they sell now that let you map out a great collage on the wall of your favorite artwork.

I do like the use of photographs and other art and books to layer the decor. Great items... I agree it's not exactly a riot of color but I definitely like the overall feel...

I grew up with two parents who loved to cook and had it engrained in my brain that no matter what, you need one to three good knives (a chef's knife, a bread knife and a paring knife at the very least), at least one or two good stainless steel pans and a cast iron skillet. I LOVE mine. It's amazing what you can do with some basic, good quality items :)

@emcguire totally agree on the microplane grater :)
