To better visualize how you want the room to look you need to clean up and declutter. Your room will look much more inviting once it's rid of dirty dishes on the couch and random things on the floor.

I would keep the fireplace and add built-ins on each side of the the fireplace. Change the curtains to a lighter color and add an area rug under the coffee table. I would also get an L shaped couch to utilize the corner area that has a table and lamp right now. I think the current couch is bulky and wastes a lot of space.

Totally agree with your assessment. I love minimalism but this house didn't pull it off very well. When there is so little stuff in each room, it's very hard to make everything look just right. The color, proportion, placement and relationship of each object has to relate to each other. Not an easy thing to pull off.

Love the colors, so playful yet sophisticated. The mix of vintage finds all come together so cohesively and give the home a modern look without being trendy.

Ikea curtains come with iron on hem tape, no need to sew. Or you can get the iron on tapes at fabric stores.

I wouldn't care if I were a buyer looking at your house. Unless the appliances are high end ones, I would probably end up replacing them. I also wouldn't pay extra for the house just because of the appliances, whatever colors they maybe.

We are in the same situation. 3 yr old boy in his room and 6 month old girl in our room. I can't wait until we get our room back!

Yes, Spiral is a good show for sure! I also recommend the swedish/original versions of "the bridge", "real humans", "wallender". Not all are on netflix. "orphan black", "the fall", and definitely "luther"!

I think the new layout is awkward with the fridge being so far away from the stove and everything up against the wall for such a long space. I would've made an island with cooktop and sink. And I am also curious about the different floor board direction and finish in the middle of the kitchen.

I have to agree with most of the commenters that the numbers are too low. Having said that our family of four live on my husband's income of around $100k in Oakland, CA. and we bought a house during the downturn for $300k in an up and coming neighborhood. There are 3 units, we live in one and rent out the other two. The rental income more than covers our mortgage.

Even if we didn't have the rental income we can comfortably afford the mortgage and it's less than what a lot of people pay in rent for a one bedroom in SF.

I store shoes by the door with Trone from Ikea due to lack of entry space. It's worked out pretty well. It also helps we don't have a ton of shoes to begin with.

I've had my IKEA kitchen for over 3 years now and they have held up very well with daily use. I put the cabinets together while I was 6 months pregnant and installed them with the help of a handyman.

I had to watch the instructional videos and then explain it to the handyman, he's never installed an IKEA kitchen before. Some parts of the installation was tricky because even in a new construction, some of the walls were not leveled, but that's how it is.

IKEA is very budget friendly and is a must for do it yourselfers. For those that have lots of money and no patience, it's probably better to go the traditional route. :)

Agree that it's sad they torn out the partition and painted all the original wood trim. Those things gave the place character. Now it's just a white box and looks sterile. I do like the fan and the new toilet.

I've never had the need for a storage unit because I lived in the same city as my parents and things got stored in their house. But when I moved in with my now husband into a small 1 bedroom, there just wasn't enough room for both of our stuff to fit so we rented a small storage unit and kept it until we bought our house.

My last sofa was a second hand Ikea leather couch that we used for 3 years and sold it on craigslist when we moved into our first house. We replaced that couch with the Ikea Kivik sectional. It was a floor model in the as-is section. We've had it now for two years and it's holding up pretty well and it's very comfortable to sleep on too. We are a young family and spending even $1000 on one piece of furniture seems outrageous. The only exception is our $2000 tempurpedic mattress.

So glad I don't have to deal with looking for an apartment. Buying a house was the best decision we ever made. But location is the most important thing when it comes to finding a place to live especially when you are buying. At least if you are renting, it's easier to just pack up and find another apartment.

The after looks great! my only concern is that the new shelves seem a lot smaller than the wire shelves, so a lot of usable space was lost just to make it look nice.
