I've never painted a wall black, but I did paint trim a glossy black. Wow, what a difference! It made the living room in my old farmhouse look sophisticated and chic. Everyone freaked out before I did it, but they LOVED it afterward.

I eat a pumpkin pie green smoothie. Spinach, almond milk, almond butter, pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, half a banana, and a scoop of protein powder. Incredibly tasty and satisfying. The added fiber from the pumpkin, fat from the almond butter, and protein from the powder keep me full until lunch. I have also successfully added a package of emergen-c to my fruitier green smoothies. It gives the smoothie a flavor and vitamin punch, and I like the fizziness.

Drink hot water. I know it sounds simple and silly, but hot liquids are a guaranteed way to warm up. However, I can only drink so much tea and eat so much soup. So, I drink my water hot almost all winter long. My body loves staying hydrated in the dry air and it loves to be warm.

@granola suicide, don't despair! I remodeled by relatively large kitchen (10 x 24) for less than $5k, including drywall, flooring, sink, paint and cupboards. We could have even gone cheaper. In my experience, doing remodeling projects inexpensively is possible, but it takes a lot of effort and time to shop around and DIY.

Haha! I was just looking at an old issue of Better Homes and Gardens last night and saw the exact same fixture. I also feel in love and was stumped on where to get it. Sorry I can't offer more info, but thanks for posting the question!

Decide where the art will go! Out of everything I own, my art and photos are my most precious possessions. I'm currently in the process of moving to a rental house after living in my own home for 9 years. I stopped by my (old) house on the way to sign the lease and loaded up the car with my art. I haven't hung most of it up yet, but just having it in the new place helps it feel like home.

My husband works as a sound engineer, so we usually end up with speaker overkill in the house. However, we needed an easy way to bring some music into the bathroom the other night while working on a project, and he surprised me by placing my iphone in a mason jar. Sure, the sound quality wasn't the greatest, but it was much improved over my tinny iphone speakers. I thought it was a brilliant hack and good enough for what we were doing.

I eat cannellini beans with everything! My new favorite is to top beans with a small amount of olive salad that is supposed to be a muffaletta topping. I also swap in cannellinis for every almost every carb (potatoes, pasta, bread) when I'm watching my weight. Tasty and helps me to flexibly cook for both me and my husband.

I'm not usually a gin drinker, but the other night a friend made me a cocktail with gin, sweetened lime juice and club soda. It was incredibly refreshing. I'm not sure what the name of said cocktail is, but I bet you could make your key lime juice work in it.

This would also work as a soup, sans vinegar and adding some stock. Just a thought.

Coffee! I finish my chilli and other red bean/meaty stews/soups with strong, dark coffee.

Thanks for the inspiration everyone! I just cooked my first pot of successful greens! I sautéed half a large yellow onion and two garlic cloves in a generous amount of oil. After about 8 minutes, I added one beef bouillon cube, a few dashes of red pepper flakes and a couple of dashes of liquid smoke. Then, I added my greens. I sautéed for about 4-5 minutes, then added about 8oz water and another bouillon cube. Then, I put the lid on my pot and braised on medium for a good 20 minutes. I added 2-3 pinches of sugar at this point, and braised for another 10 minutes or so. Best greens I've ever had!

I love mixing 2 parts club soda to 1 part cranberry juice. Good for the urinary tract and the taste buds.

I've been following an earlier tip from the kitchn to roast acorn squash halves with oil, salt, pepper and a garlic clove inside. I scoop out the squash, mash with garlic clove and some goat cheese, then finish with my magic ingredient: a drizzle of black truffle oil. The earthiness of the truffle oil gives the dish just enough extra complexity.

I FINALLY have a library! I labeled the room as a library when we moved in, and just refused to call it anything else or use it for anything else. I was so stubborn that we actually completely remodeled another room to be the dining room, even though my library would have worked just fine.
It took 8 years, but it is now complete with bookcases with ladder, reading/psychoanalysis chaise, desk, art and collection of natural curiosities. Dreams can come true!!

I'm not sure I'm a fan of patriotic style for patriotism's sake, but I do like a home that is firmly rooted in the history of it's location or in the history of it's owners. We live in the suburbs of Detroit, and so many of the stories here are industrial and tied to the growth of the automotive industry. Our house was built in 1930, and I can't imagine our design not reflecting some of that history. It just seems natural.

Loved this post. I collect bones, fossils and shells with a passion. I tell my friends (and my husband) how much I love dead things, and they promptly call me creepy. Thanks for the validation!

I do this all the time. My cure is the same as one mentioned above: invite someone from out of town. Or, I put myself in a similar position to be embarrassed if it isn't done. Works every time.
