I use two 50 year mechanical sewing machine each mounted to a table (both off brands, mother's and grandmother's). Both work well with oiling and (rare) repairs. I also go to a sewing studio and it is a great way to learn more from those more experienced and to try out the fancier stitches. Best of both worlds. That said, I do like the idea of these smaller, potable ones, though, that take up much less space!

Interesting...can a similar method be used for dishwashers? We've been putting lemon juice in a cup on the top part, to marginal effect. (Better but not clean.) Would love to see if this works or have AT run another similar one on dishwasher cleaning.

This is timely. One of my "project goal" was to revamp the living room, especially the lighting. We just got an outlet and overhead light repaired by an electrician yesterday and it feels like a different place. So we have overhead light and a floor lamp, but I am wondering about good sources for table lights. We have orange-shaded Ikeas lamp (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90155016) but mixed withe blue aquarium light, it's kind of strange.

We've cleaned radiators using a combination of a Dust Buster/compressed air, then spray bottle with water and rags (plastic bag under to catch). Very time consuming but much cleaner. If the radiators don't work and they are hot water, get a bleed key to bleed out any air that is caught in the system and put a bowl under it to catch any drips. If you can't control the entire system, ask your landlord.

I started this over when we had to declutter books and media...because my bookcases were filled with papers not books! I am not quite finished yet so I enjoy hearing about the systems everyone has in place!

ladykatey, try alstroemeria or Peruvian lilies. Irises and roses from the first week didn't make it 1/2 week but the alstroemeria bought last Friday are still going strong a week later. Our house is dry, too. Good luck!

Ouch. This is harder than yesterday and yesterday was hard.... I don't trust going all digital. I just lost 8 years of photos from Snapfish's website, without prints of many. We have been burning CDs intermittently for over 5 years and still have the cases. I can't part with me books en masse, although I might look at removing a small few I am embarrassed to own. I am considering getting rid of 10 years of Architectural Record and that would free up a lot of space. I will try but have to admit that I am old-fashioned in this regard.

I am going to frame a trio of (professional bw) family photographs taken last year. I started over the holiday with an old black IKEA frame, but it looks rough and a Sharpie didn't help. (Frame belongs in an Outbox not the wall, with scuffs and no glass!) I really like the mid-way solution mentioned by another poster: new mats and glass.

Day 6: Choose a Piece of Artwork & Get Going on Framing It Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/9/13 8:44 PM

After completing the introspection yesterday, I am going to tackle several problems in the living room and entry that create stress for our family everyday:
-get overhead light working (call manufacturer for parts or call electrician to fix or install a new one.) This has been off for years (although the fan part works) and may take all month. But it would be worth it!
-One of the two coat hooks is loose and dumps plaster dust. A larger fastener won't fit in the hook's hole. We plan to add dowels and glue, but failing that, will need to drill a new one in brick.
-Look for somewhere to hang two messenger bags, without fighting with the brick walls. Ideas?
-Outbox kid's shoes so there is not a battle with preschooler to try on toddler stuff that doesn't fit.
Look forward to seeing everyone's before and afters. Off to photograph.

Day 5: Select One Project from Your List to Complete this Month Apartment Therapy January Cure

Biggest problem is a running toilet, that saps the pressure from other fixtures.

The vanity is white plastic laminate with gold flecks and it is located 3 inches from the side wall. Wide enough to lose a lot of stuff, but to narrow to rescue anything.

The tile is harvest yellow on all walls. The floors are yellow sheet vinyl meant to look like "stonework."

There is a towel rack in the shower and another just over the vanity. One place is too wet for towels and the other space is too short (well, maybe it is supposed to hang in the weird gap between the vanity and wall!). They are hung on the shower curtain rod.

The space is really cold. The space is surrounded by exterior walls on three sides, of uninsulated brick and the radiator is tiny.

Would love quick solutions. (I like the discussion of hooks instead of rods!) I think we are ready to "throw in the towel," and renovate.

A bit overwhelming, given it's a small rowhouse from the 1890s and it feels like everything needs work, even after 5 years. Luckily, we completed a number of items (not listed) around and before the holidays. I hope I can keep the momentum going! Here goes the edited list:

Living Room
- Fix overhead light (only light is the fish tank lamps, part of the day!)
- Fix coat hook (it's winter here)
- Organize shoes and jackets

Dining
-De-clutter desk and bookcases
-Install real transition strip at kitchen
-Plaster touch up and paint

Kitchen
-Declutter and find home for recycling, Comparatively OK

Den
-Clutter on both desks
-Overflowing closet
-Get rid of defunct computer

Bathroom/Dressing Room
-New toilet ASAP
-Declutter vanity and medicine cabinet
-Declutter linen closet and dressing room
-Plan for full renovation

Bedrooms
-Clean out clothes that don't fit
-Purge/donate old books/part of fabric stash

Basement
-New janitor's sink (may be a professional job)
-Vinyl flooring at laundry
-Pitch junk

Good luck to all in completing your lists!

The first image is actually cork tiles, not pennies.

Still amazing. Pinned it awhile ago, and the rest of the bathroom is great, too.
