Taking the dog for a walk, a REAL walk, as in doing your job as a pet owner and providing your dog with sufficient exercise, requires pretty much the same clothes you'd wear to the gym. Not easy to do in "dedicated" pjs (as worded perfectly by pinkalbatross) or work clothes and heels.

Maybe I'm weird but I wear the same pjs for a few nights in a row...I don't have enough potential sleepwear items to get them sweaty and dirty every day with dog walks. For our morning walks, it's sweats in the winter and shorts in the summer with yesterday's t-shirt. For a mid-day stroll 'n sniff or bathroom break I'll add sneakers to whatever I'm already wearing. Can't recall the last time we had to out in the middle of the night...an adult dog on scheduled meals means we'd only need to go out at night if she's sick.

I lie. There I said it.

My complex has a leash law (so does the entire county) - unleashed dogs play in front of the manager's office, they say nothing and most of the time even play with the dogs, encouraging the behavior. These unleashed dogs have attacked several leashed dogs in the complex.

My complex provides poop bags - even when residents are reported for not picking up after their dogs, management does nothing.

My complex doesn't allow dogs in the pool area - again, even when residents are reported, management does nothing.

My complex has weight and breed restrictions - there are more dogs on property violating those restrictions than adhering to them.

When management decides to get their act together then I'll volunteer to pay the $100/month pet rent and the $750 non-refundable deposit for my dog who, coincidentally, meets/adheres to all the rules.

LOL, good catch laffcat.

Powdered would be better though, doesn't look like fine enough shreds to effectively destroy sensitive documents.

Is Southern California still part of CA? Just checking.

Unless I'm missing something, there's not a single recycling facility in the lower half of the state. And, sorry, but I don't have it in my budget to pay for recycling.

Who'da thunk this would be such a hot topic?! Don't know how many commenters come back to check responses but since a few were addressed to me...

First, mouth-breathers unite!! :-)

@krl2876 - It's the continuous passage of air over the lips that's the problem and god forbid you accidentally lick your lips - vicious cycle commences.

@propellergirl - Yep, I rock the neti pot. It's upholstered furniture (read: dust mites) that causes most of my problems now and I'm too cheap/broke to zip everything in plastic.

Water - I drink about a gallon of water per day. I absolutely notice worse cracking on my lips if I'm dehydrated but even fully hydrated water doesn't solve all the problems (and doesn't block the suns rays either).

If you have severe nasal allergies and breathe through your mouth (feel free to insert jokes here) then, no, your lips cannot maintain their own moisture. If I don't use medicated lip balm as a preventative measure before bed in the winter I wake up with bloody, cracked lips. Plus, lip balm tastes better than smearing sunscreen on my lips.

Um..training?? My dog is trained to stay off furniture unless invited. She's also trained to stay out of certain rooms and stops at the threshold (without baby gates.)

While the referenced article simply uses "fashionable" as a figure of speech, if people are becoming frugal because that is what the Joneses are doing then it's not going to last. As soon as McMansions and designer labels become "fashionable" again, the lemmings will follow.

That being said, I see very little frugality in my area of SoCal. Still plenty of people driving their Hummers 1 block to run an errand, plenty of shopping carts full of expensive and crap-quality food, boxes from just-purchased, high-end electronics in the dumpsters on a weekly basis, etc.

Pricey, but I'd do it for the following value:

-don't have to worry about storing the tree stand the other 11 months of the year
-living tree means the dry winds won't turn it into kindling the day after it's put up
-someone else gets to maneuver it up the stairs
-not going to landfill on 1/2

Worth it for me but too late for this year's budget, I'll definitely put it in for next year.
