that first photo is an optical illusion! it makes the bed look SO high off the floor, when it's really no taller than the average bunk. COOL! i would have loved this as a kid!

i vote for an electric light. natural light is great, until it's dark outside... and then you'd be relying on the electric light from the other bathroom, filtered through something opaque? doesn't seem efficient!

no kids of my own, but after working in childcare for 13 years, i started to be very conscious of just how many disposables i'd changed and thrown away. when my best friend and wife asked me to nanny their son, i couldn't think of a better opportunity to try cloth. though i did it on my own dime, and though they chose not to use them at home, it has been a very rewarding experience to learn the ins and outs of cloth (mistakes and all!). i'm sure i'll use it for my own children someday, or if i foster. :)

i think cloth diapering isn't even on a lot of modern parents' radar nowadays, so many don't even get the chance to consider it.

i'm spending extended time in the caribbean right now with the family i nanny for. his parents are here working, and obviously I'M working, but it's a vacation for the toddler! the parents enjoy themselves as a family unit on nights and weekends, just like they would at home.

the flight was a dream (even though he's normally a bit of a wild child), and we've found LOTS to do (even though there aren't many SPECIFIC kid-centric activities). it's all in what you make of it! honestly, i think it's been harder for ME as a single young adult, trying to find activities in the evenings, than it has been for him as a 2.5 year old!

someone recently asked me what the must-haves were for a new baby. i appreciate my opinion being valued, because i'm not even a parent (just a nanny with very extensive experience)... but the only answer i could give is every parent/baby is different.

it's a concept well-illustrated here!

I actually used two giant versions of this (5' wide by 2' deep by 7' tall) to create "walls" for a nursery in my loft, and ended up having one of the shelves perfectly at changing table height. Works great, and I threw a few wine crates on it for storage (though any crate or soft-sided box or basket) would work just fine.

i think this would be a pretty sound investment for a photographer. photographed from one side, it's a bathtub. from the other, it's a couch. wish i had one!! i would totally use it in my photography studio/loft!

since i suck at maintaining flowers of any kind... if it were mine, and doable, i would stencil in some kind of cool design, in a bright (but complementary) color, that meanders down those steps. sort of like a welcome mat, but much more personal!

final voting time!!!

after looking carefully through all the entries, you know what i noticed? this is an:
a) apartment that's
b) therapeutic, though
c) small, it's definitely
d) cool.
okay, yes, i'm cheesy, but it's true.

and... it shows off ALL of its fabulously assembled rooms, without relying too much on the bones on the structure. sure, we choose the bones when we rent or buy... but the true art of it is in the assemblage of our possessions within said bones.

way to go, lady. here's hoping you win!

just, wow. there is nothing in it that's not amazing. i'm taking with me some inspiration for my own (albeit much smaller) open-plan loft.

ahh. this was me in my last place. i rented a huge historic house as a live-work space... imagine my surprise when i spent 90% of my time in the very large master bedroom. i had a queen bed, loveseat, entertainment center, bookshelf, in-room shoe storage shelves, and three rugs... and it still wasn't FULL. the rest of the place? out of sight, out of mind! it stayed a mess, i'm sad to say.

the only solution for me was to move into a smaller space and get rid of most of the junk taking up space! i moved into a loft with an open floor plan in which nothing can really be hidden (except my closet... that's STILL a disaster area, but i'm also still paring down clothes). everything stays quite a bit cleaner now that whomever comes to visit will instantly be subjected to the mess!

three words: loft the bed!

other than that, i really love the space. it has great contrast between dark and light.

absolutely love!

but, can inanimate objects be viewed as masculine or feminine? i think my view on it is more as dark and utilitarian than masculine... but that's a po-tay-to po-tah-to situation :)

i ended up using off-white canvas painter's drop cloths for my large 8'x5' windows. perfect solution.

Keep it Simple: White Curtains and Natural Blinds

I nanny for a little boy who comes to me in the mornings, and then I take him to the house of the other child I nanny in the afternoon. He's still young enough to need a nap in both places, and I live in an open-plan apartment/loft. I used large shelving to section off a part of the room to make a separate bedroom for him. I've found that noise isn't so much the problem... it's him being able to SEE me. He won't go to sleep if he can see me moving around or walking by, which means that when he naps in the mornings, I have to stay in one specific area of the apartment (inconvenient, b/c I have to walk by his area to get to the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room). Noise does occasionally bother him, but there's no where in my place where he couldn't hear noise.

In the afternoons, he shares a bedroom with his toddler friend (friend in a bed, baby in a pack-n-play). Neither have a problem falling asleep with the other in the room and aren't really bothered as much by noise when they're together. Plus, because of the way that room is set up, even with the door open the baby can't see me, and falls asleep faster. :)

Hope that helps!

i falsely believed i needed to "upgrade" with each move, even in rentals. extra bedrooms for guests who rarely came. more bathrooms, even though i'm single. set-aside rooms to work from home. ugh. it was so tiring. this last move, i pared down my possessions and moved into a loft with one bathroom and no yard upkeep. i am still destashing possessions in hopes of getting down to ONE minivan load full, for the next time i move (which will likely be to nyc). feels good to be free!

On Helping Family & Friends Understand Your Small Space

i truly dislike one-time-use disposable items. in my opinion, they're just a symptom of a lazy society.

if it's THAT big of an issue, then why not just use a single cloth, in a designated bin, after each hand wash? same concept, and you could WASH them afterward instead of throwing them away.

this product is just a way to make people (who are already too lazy to wash their hand towel regularly) feel better about germs that shouldn't even BE THERE after washing your hands properly.

we're killing ourselves with convenience...
