in new orleans (which sometimes seems like a foreign country), the birthday celebrant pins a dollar bill on his/her shirt with a safety pin to which people contribute additional bills throughout the day. by the end of the day, the birthday boy/girl has a small fortune!

here in NOLA, the show-stopping recipes at any mardi gras event are mostly of the liquid ilk - sloe gin fizz or cajun bloody marys (with lots of tony chachere's, tobasco, and pickled green beans added) are my personal faves. as per food, you can't go wrong with a good dark gumbo, beans and rice, or bread pudding (with the whiskey sauce!). frank davis is a local cooking guru - any of his recipes are definitely the real deal: http://www.wwltv.com/frank-davis. if your friend gets the baby from whatever king cake is provided, let her know to order the cake for the next party from manny randazzo's bakery - they'll ship and they're worth it!

yeah, no fear of the onions and garlic on this end either! i've got an apple-cucumber-red onion salad with red wine vinegar, carrot-ginger-garlic soup (last night's dinner), and an apple for the mid-afternoon munchies.
