I make two batches of vanilla extract per year because I let them age for 6 months a piece. I give them as gifts too and people love em. The best part is how super vanilla-ly they smell and the little specks of bean they add to desserts such as creme brulee.

I wanted to invest in a set myself, when I moved into a new place. I was tired of having mixed and matched silverware. I ended up with a set from Villeroy & Boch and couldn't be happier. You get what you pay for and I got it for a good deal (it was on sale, direct from the manufacturer).

I wonder if it'd be much easier to spread the Sriracha on a mat in the dehydrator and let that dry, then break it up with a spice grinder or food processor, then mix it with salt? Why bother mixing the dry salt with the Sriracha to begin with, only to dry it out again?

Totally agree. I loved using my Twist and Sparkle and I had plenty of co2 carts since I use an iSi Siphon for cooking. I couldn't believe they pulled it off the market. It was nice of Amazon to credit me back without having to send it back. I threw it away of course (not worth the danger of an exploding container).

I don't own a Soda Stream but to me, the biggest hack you can do is to install an adapter that allows you to use standard, refillable, co2 tank. They are cheap and easily found, used most often for paintball markers. I have spare 9 oz, 12 oz and 20 oz bottles sitting around. Sure beats the exchange program for co2 that Soda Stream has.

Am I the only one who thought this whole story was a little confusing? Matt is the boyfriend and he went to Hobart's (team of designers) to get a custom mixer for his girlfriend. Hobart's team posts on a blog under the guise of (Mixed Up) Jake and they speak as if they are really some guy named Jake.

I initially thought Matt did this himself. I didn't realize he just paid a mixer company money to produce it. Awesome gift of course, but it took me a few reads to get.

I've never made lobster bisque but love to eat it so this headline piqued my interest. Did you just "invent" the idea of pureeing the shells and meat? I don't really have an issue eating either but is this normal for this type of soup? I have a Vitamix so there'd be nothing left to strain out if I were to put shells and meat inside it, so I "would" be eating the shells. This is a very curious recipe.

I am going to second What Sam Groves said - silica packets, of all shapes and sizes, are really cheap and easy to find. The url escapes me but there is a major site that specializes in selling these.

I will give it a shot since I don't want to commit to making my own kimchi. It disappoints me that it's vegetarian since I don't believe the true funk of kimchi can be accomplished without the use of seafood.

Who here can confidently say they can turn out macarons that look and taste right with any degree of consistency? I certainly can't and I consider myself a pretty good cook/baker. For me, nothing has yielded more failures than macarons.

Michael Ruhlman posted a long thread/essay on this and it's very interesting. I have read about people aging their eggnong in their garages (this is in a part of the country with relatively stable temps and humidity) for a whole year! Guess what? They haven't died yet. I really want to give this a try.
