I have a blanket chest built by a grandfather who died before I was born. I keep it by my bed. I have a Velvet tobacco can that belonged to my other grandfather that's usually tucked in a window sill corner. When my friend Lilian died of breast cancer, her daughters folded 1,000 cranes. I have some paper cranes from her funeral in a crystal bowl on my piano. I also have lots of very old family photos. How Do You Memorialize Loved Ones at Home? |

I usually clean my shower in the nude or in undies. No point in getting my clothes wet. In fact, I usually stand barefoot in the shower while I clean and use the shower nozzle to spray down the walls. (I use eco-friendly products so I'm not worried about getting chemicals on my skin.) I like to wear a full skirt with pockets while cleaning so that I can move freely & have a place to put stuff that I find but I don't dress up. #1 is super cute but at $70 a plate, I think I'll stick with the 1950s-era dessert set that my dad brought back from when he was stationed in Japan. Fresh and Unique Dishware for Serving Dessert | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

I just invested in a collapsible panier for my bike rack and LOVE it. ($17 on sale at Bike Gallery in Portland.) Normally I also have used a milk crate, which is somewhat handy, and have packed groceries in a backpack or a messenger bag. Be careful how much heavy stuff you stuff in those. My messenger bag ripped from too many heavy cans from my trip to the Asian grocery. I've also strapped folded-over canvas grocery bags to my rack with bungees. The biggest challenge in my bathroom is dealing with my hair appliances (what do you call those, anyway?): blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron, hot rollers, etc. I have a small chest of drawers where I keep them when not in use (i.e., when company is coming) but it's more practical to have them out. Without a bathroom counter, however, and with just the small top of the chest, it gets really cluttered and I'm always knocking them on the floor. All grown-up girls should have a pink bathroom. That's what I'm planning on painting mine, as soon as I get around to it. I seem to remember in Margaret Atwood's "Cat's Eye," the protagonist says that women of a certain age should paint their bathrooms pink because it does wonders for the way their complexion looks in the mirror in the morning. Might I also suggest, instead of a notepad to make your grocery list, save envelopes or even the tear-off portion of your Netflix DVD mailers. Both are great to reuse as scrap paper for grocery lists. How To Waste (Almost) Nothing In The Kitchen Home Hacks | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

I once knew a guy who had a search-and-rescue dog. While he worked with various law enforcement agencies, he was also available on a freelance basis, and he had been hired in the past to search for missing pets, including cats. That may seem counterintuitive given common cat/dog animosity, but apparently it's been successful. Just thought I would toss that out there since no one has mentioned it. I believe there's a national network of search-and-rescue dog handlers. Help! Cat Sitting...And The Cat Runs Away | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

Ditto to almost everything that everyone stocks. During the summer, I make and freeze pesto (basil pesto and argula pesto are favorites) so with pasta, I have a quick dinner. I also keep corn tortillas in the freezer and some soy "cheddar" on hand, which, with beans, make up into quick tostadas. (During the summer, I add whatever garden veggies make sense; during the winter, Trader Joe's peach salsa.) I'm also a BIG fan of vacuum-packed Mori-No silken tofu and cartons of soy milk, neither of which require refrigeration. We also continue to grow greens in our garden throughout the winter (in cold frames, last year). Having a four-season garden has extended the pantry in wonderful ways. How timely! My boyfriend and I have been making homemade pasta a few times in the past week. We have an inexpensive pasta machine that I bought some 20 years ago, and hadn't used in quite a while. I've been perfecting a vegan pasta recipe using egg replacer, and it's been turning out better than egg-based pastas that I used to make. For handmade pasta (without a machine), mooie_ziel, I would check out Mollie Katzen's "Enchanted Broccoli Forest" cookbook. She explains how to do it, and I've always found her diagrams and explanations very easy to follow. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | How To Make Pasta: Tips From My Italian-Mother-in-Law |

When I moved to a more urban neighborhood in NE Portland (ie a greater mix of apartments, single-family homes and light commercial), I discovered that my neighborhood also was more aggressively frequented by "the shopping cart people." I discovered this at about 4 a.m. on the first really hot day of the year, when I had gone to bed with my window open and awoke to the noise of someone digging through the recycle bin directly under my window. Rational thought doesn't immediately kick in when you are awakened by what also can sound like someone breaking into your bedroom, and I was terrified! (In my old neighborhood, can and bottle collectors dug through the bins once they were put by the curb on garbage/recycling day, but they didn't go in the back yard to scavenge.) I think that house guests understand that everyone lives their lives and runs their homes a bit differently. Let them know your "quirks"--what to use instead of paper towels, etc. I wouldn't go buy things that you normally do not keep on hand. Unless your city is water rationing, be relaxed about whether they run water while brushing their teeth, or whatever else you do. And I would definitely flush. This surprises me, because I've always used (and reused) either U-Haul or Fred Meyer brand moving boxes. I've never had a problem with my moving boxes failing to hold up, even after a couple moves. I mostly use the "small" boxes, saving the medium and large boxes for truly lightweight things like clothing, fabric, blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, my vintage hat collection, etc. Granted, the U-Haul boxes that I have used had a slightly different printing design, so perhaps while promoting the boxes' reusableness, they made them less sturdy and thus less reusable. By contrast, the liquor store boxes, despite seeming sturdy, have tended to fall apart more easily, perhaps because heavy items are putting pressure at points other than where the liquor bottles would. I'm all for reducing the chemicals I use in my home, but unless you live in California or Florida, the carbon footprint for the citrus fruit doesn't seem to make this idea all that ecofriendly. Plus, lemons and limes are expensive! On those rare occasions when I do buy citrus, I want to eat it (or squeeze it into a margarita), not polish with it! I'm still struck by the irony that, at age 17, my parents would not let me take the bus into downtown Portland by myself or even with friends, but they sent me off to France on an exchange program where I took rode my bikes all over Versailles by myself and took trains and buses to Chartres accompanied only by my 16-year-old host brother. Before I started renting my garage, I kept my bike in the furnace room of my triplex's shared laundry room. And when I was riding it a lot last summer, before renting the garage, I sometimes was parking it in my living room. That's one change that I made when I was doing the Apartment Therapy challenge.
