I am kind of frustrated/disturbed at how much these are a complete copy of the original Binth Numbers Poster. Am I alone in noticing this?

I believe that quote is from Oscar Wilde . . .

I was really digging this space, the light, the airiness, the Kolford Larson rocker . . . and then I saw the three massive turtle shells on the wall as decoration. I am no animal rights activist, but man, that just made me feel like something in the picture wasn't all adding up. I mean green/slow and then you've got the turtles? (And honestly I couldn't help the black humor from clicking on either, like hey, those turtles really do represent their peeps for the slow housing movement!) What exactly is thoughtful, sustainable, local and slow about slapping a trio of shells on a wall? I mean, wouldn't a rocking piece of art by a local artisan been just as powerful?

there are lots of decole (and often included in zakka sites) online. I think I've seen something like this at Lokoko Shop.

I am a huge fan of Lill Street (I especially like their Play with Clay classes on Saturdays for parents and little ones) but for you budget-minded would-be artists, do not forget the Chicago Park District--and hey, it's your tax dollars going for the class offerings so you ought to take advantage of the super low prices. Horner Park's ceramics classes are amazing, Cheryl W. is an exceptional teacher and it will set you back something like $60. Lincoln Park has a woodworking class with all the heavy equipment you could hope to play with and a ceramics class as well, Wilson park has a sewing class that is insanely popular and I believe Loyola park still has a jewelry class. the CPD website can be rather tortuous at searching but sometimes they list classes by park.

I agree, there's not much re-sale value for a $20 Ikea chair but it holds up beautifully and since it's made of plastic and metal (two things that will practically never, ever breakdown when heaped into a landfill) it's a nice environmental choice if it gets handed down to a friend with a baby or even off to the resale shop. But maybe you live in New York where almost everything that gets set out gets taken away quite briskly. Here in Chicago if you throw it in the dumpster, it's going to get hauled off to the dump.

Getting back on topic though . . . the hard sell for most first time parents on this chair is it looks a little er, hard. But that is exactly what is so perfect about it. My friends have the kind with all the padding and that's where all the bits of food like to slide down and hide. And some of those chairs are enormous (the Peg Perego comes to mind). This one does not fold down but it also doesn't eat up an entire corner of your apartment.

we are thrilled with the Antilop, it's now being used by our second son. It's the kind of chair you can literally hose down, if need be. (trust me, we've been there) And the price was so good, we bought one for grandma's house as well. I am not quite clear on the comment above . . . does "chug it in the bin?" mean "throw it away?"

textile outlet is a gem, I was just there yesterday. note that their hours are even more limited the next few weeks because of the Jewish Holidays.

Jo-Ann Fabric is having an impressive sale right now, all off their in-stock upholstery fabrics are 50% off. You can even order additional yardage if the bolt doesn't have enough on it.

Keep looking, I found a great chair (but only 1) much like the green one pictured for $85 at the Brownstone Antiques on Clark Street in Andersonville. It was literally buried under other chairs in the back of the store. The Salvation Army store on Grand Ave. under the train tracks usually has an impressive amount of chairs for sale.

also, for anyone interested, there a couple of parks that still have upholstery classes. It's a screaming deal, something like $60 for a 6-8 week class. The catch is the locations aren't great, Calumet Park is one of them. But it's worth it for a very hands-on education. I've met a couple of people who took the class a few times and then went on to upholster for a living.

best of luck!
