We always celebrate Valentine's over President's Day weekend. In the beginning, we did this because we lived on different coasts and the long weekend made the most sense for travel. We've kept the tradition alive to avoid the chaos and pressure of Valentine's Day. I prefer Valentine's Day get-togethers with friends for the 14th itself. Leslie Knope has the right idea with Galentine's Day!

We watch a lot of football on our Clarke sofa from Room and Board. You could add the selectional piece if he need to to stretch out in the the direction of the game. (http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=19166) If you have company over you could move that piece to another part of the room to create another seating section. It is very comfortable and unfussy.

I looked this up the cost of the Oriental Express for a possible honeymoon excursion. Sadly, it is unbelievably expensive.

Ok, Apartment Therapy it is time to hire/find a wine person to work for The Kitchn.

About a year ago you had a suggestion that people freeze leftover wine for cooking. For the record, please don't do that. There are so many other better options. Boxed wine for cooking comes to mind because the bag limits air exposure. You can also pour leftover wine into a smaller bottle really anything that you can recap (so a nice clean beer bottle or a smaller ginger beer bottle if you have less wine). You can get a capping device and caps pretty cheap. Filled up, the rebottling option gives you bit of time before you need to worry about wine becoming oxidized beyond its utility in the kitchen.

And now this?? Blending?? No, no, no! Decanting is often unnecessary. Wine needs a few things to be happy the right temperature, no sunlight, and please don't physically abuse it. (Sounds a little like a Gremlin, no? Don't feed it after midnight...) If you fell you have a bottle that needs decanting by all means decant it. Open a less closed wine to start the night! Your friends will never be sad to have MORE wine. If they are, find new friends.

But PLEASE put your hands at your sides and step away from the blender...

I am going to have to second thehaystackneedle's comment here! This picture is all over Pinterest now but it is very difficult to find the original source. I just happened to be looking at Freeman's website today and recognized the entry way to the restaurant as something I had pinned. People deserve credit for their work. Both the designers of this space and the photographer who snapped the picture.

Actually, I'm pretty sure these shelves occur in another Unplugged post about lighting preferences. Perhaps the author has more information?

ohjasonj - We have a similar shelving system in our apartment. You can find them at mid-century antique stores. Now what I don't know is how widely available shelving systems like that are (particularly with the wood wall strips and wood rather than wire supports on the shelves). The closest I can come to giving you a name to search for is Poul Cadovius's wall systems, which is similar but perhaps not exactly the same.

We're using ours as an entertainment center. Don't worry we cut through the wall (not the wood) to run the cords. I love them!

Not really a main dish but my very favorite thing to do with poblano peppers is to stuff them with mashed sweet potatoes mixed with goat cheese and then roast them. Sweet and a little spicy. Yum!

tbigs - I think you can safely inform your host that you have a life threatening food allergy and would be interested in attending dinner if you could bring a prepared dish for yourself and others. Asking about the intended menu would allow you to cater your dish to fit with the spirit of the meal. I cannot imagine someone giving you a hard time for this request. If they do, they are clearly not worth it. Don't bother with them. Who needs friends who can respect our basic health and safety? Heck, this conversation is probably a great litmus test for gauging who is and isn't worth your time.

(My comment above is not directed at folks, like laurabellk, who are suggesting other meaningful directions for the conversation.)

I don't think a vegetarian should ever have to just suck it up and eat meat. I get trying to be accommodating and if you are flexible about eating meat some of the time then more power to you. But just as I would not ask someone to overlook a religious dietary restriction or a food allergy, I wouldn't expect a vegetarian or vegan to eat meat or animal products, respectively. "Your allergic to glutton [keep kosher], well everything I made has glutton [is non-kosher]. Better eat it anyway to avoid possibly hurting my feelings." See sounds pretty absurd, doesn't it?

Just be polite. If possible communicate clearly with your host beforehand. Never lecture about your food choices even if you're asked. Keeping those responses simple is always best. Anything more can become hurtful and annoying. Oh yeah, be polite.

To "talked to death" contingent in this comments section: Clearly this question has not been talked to death since there is a vibrant discussion occurring before your very eyes. Why are you reading and commenting on a post that no longer interest you?

I would say rather than freezing your wine, particularly if you are planning on drinking it later, after you open it transfer it to a small, clean glass bottle (like an old 12 oz beer or something smaller for a lesser amount). If you fill it all the way to the top and then cap it with a bottle capper, it will keep for quite sometime. Make sure to leave as little air as possible in the bottle. You can store the "mini-bottles" in the fridge or out if you wish. Bottle cappers can easily be purchased at any homebrew supply shop for about 13 bucks along with some caps for a couple dollars more.

Oh and make sure to label them unless you want wine surprise. :-)
