I've gone back and forth on this. I love the space; raw is good. But I think it cries out for an all-white treatment, and I say that as someone who doesn't generally care for that. But I think there's a case to be made here that the random wall colors just make the space smaller. And, of course, if they got rid of half their stuff, or hid it in storage with drawers, it would help. Imagine how that hanging light fixture would pop against ultra white!

The mural doesn't do it for me but kudos for trying something different.

i would prefer 4 burners, but you've hit the nail on the head when you say most people would probably want a new kitchen with 2 burners than an outdated/inconvenient one with 4.

Is the vent over the range gone? I think I would have kept that...looks great otherwise, esp. the arrangement of tools etc. over the sink. Very convenient.

The colors really work together. It's obvious you had a specific palette in mind and stuck with it. I know it's a rental, but if you plan on staying for a while, you might want to splurge on a Murphy bed and open up the living space. My beef with studios is the bedroom-in-the-living area thing.

One quibble: is there a way to arrange the office so the shelves aren't blocking the window? Would it be too distracting to put your desk in front or perpendicular to the window.

Actually it isn't that expensive. I don't think you'd be able to find a cabinet maker to build it for less. My concern -- and i like its looks -- is that the mounting system wouldn't support a full load of books. Elfa, btw, can be pretty expensive for a full wall unit, even on sale, and it looks like crap.

i second the flor carpet squares. since you have dogs and may be remodeling in a few years, I'd get the cheap, durable ones suitable for high traffic areas. also, rather than ugg slippers, get a few pairs of cheap heavy fleece scuffs at llbean. think they're 20 bucks and you won't mind spilling coffee on them...

I enjoy seeing other people's lifestyles, but I have to agree that tours like this aren't what a site called Apartment Therapy is about. Especially since Maxwell has made his bones on the "8-step cure," which this house could probably stand to undergo.

There's a lot of cool objets and objects here, but what is the point if they're buried under the detritus of everyday life? I dunno, I understand the beauty in the quotidian, but all this clutter just makes me frantic.

Yes, not a masonry bit. That's for bricks. Use a tile bit, and get 3 or 4 so you always have a sharp one. i use a nailset to break the surface, drill at a low speed, and keep a spray bottle for cooling the bit. (you don't need the water drip/guide, but they do work)

I also cheat and use the grout whenever possible although it's not quite so aesthetically pleasing. As for level, it can be really tricky. Especially with brackets in which the screws fit into a keyhole slot...

I checked out this one as well as the CB2 one--i was hoping the quality would be up to snuff. The UO model is incredibly flimsy...don't bother unless you're gonna use it as a sculpture. The CB2 is a little better but not by much. And mskk is correct about hanging by neck. One alternative is wall hooks with nice curved wooden coat hangers. Your guests will appreciate it.

Really like those Lolita chairs and the gray couch in the office area -- and, of course, the deck. Obviously the br is still a work in progress.

What I don't like -- and it's not his fault -- is the completely uninspired interior space. The outside is cool, sort of a modernized mews, but the Home Depot kitchen and bath are seriously blah. When I saw the exposed ductwork, I was thought we'd see a industrial-type space...DC is warm enough for exposed beams and concrete floors, maybe even casement windows...

I'd rethink the beige couch in the living area. It's a little too massive for the small space.
