I could live here.

It is ironical that Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams have written a book about furnishing and decorating "for less". In my mind, less is certainly not going to their shop to select high-end-with-a-price-tag-to-match sofa from their inventory. I mean, they don't even post prices on their website, almost in the tradition of "If you have to ask, then you can't afford it".

I guess it's all relative. After all, they are having a sale this month with up to 70% off their regular prices. Maybe the recession has finally hit them.

I wish I could relate. I grew up in a rambling Victorian house with candy-hued vintage and modern furniture and folk art on the walls. Everything else was found curbside. Interesting and fairly stylish by traditional standards, I still craved a "normal" house when I was a kid and was always embarrassed to invite kids over after school because our house was so quirky.

Stunning. And for short money, too. A big win all around.

We have several Tofbo bath mats around the house in various colours. It's a nice way to create an area rug (we place them side by side, or end to end) that you can lift and plunk into the washer. With three cats, this is almost a "must"!

I think if I were to have done this myself with items around the house, I'd say it was cool, if a bit...weird. But for a commercial/artistic product, it looks a bit too *tight*. Maybe if the items were a bit more open, the scale might be more appealing.

We caught an exhibit of his work last summer at the Centre Pompidou. The mobiles are amazing, playful, and dance so well in air currents. His wire face sculptures are even more incredible, although I suppose they won't be licensing them anytime in the future.

This will be like coming home again. When I was just a kid, around 12 or 13, my best friend and I would oh and ah at the windows of DR and swear that one day, we would have a fabulous apartment with all modern furniture. I can't wait to see the instillation: I'm sure my 40-something nose will be once-again pressed against the glass!

I agree with a number of the posts, but would not agree with painting the wood. This will actually reduce the value of the house.

If you could somehow put lighter-coloured panels fitted in the back of the bookcases, that would be a great start. Again, don't paint them, cover them.

I would look into getting recessed lighting installed, which would lighten up the room considerably. Maybe installing lighting in the bookcases, which will reflect light back into the room.

Furniture: a larger, brighter/lighter carpet would be good. Furniture upholstery should also be a bit lighter, maybe even white. Once done, address the colour of the plaster in the room. I'd paint it a deeper colour, maybe a rich butterscotch or russet.

My husband has his room in the house to do with whatever he wishes: huge honking tv, chairs you can sleep in during a marathon of Sunday football, and side tables for sandwiches and drinks. It actually is pretty comfortable, even if it isn't the most stylish room in the house. It makes for a happy, well-balanced, peaceful home: everyone has their space for their "time".

Perhaps a larger piece of furniture on the left of the fireplace, placed at an angle. I'm thinking a large cabinet, about the height of the shelf on the mantle, something that will take your focus toward it (and not the fireplace) while sitting in the living room. It might also help obscure the view of it jutting out from the other end of the living room.

Maybe moving the couch/settee to an angle in the bay windows as well, so as not to be confronted with said heating unit?

We still have a collection of punk albums from my husband's adolescence in the UK. We love the graphics, the colours, the liner notes. Sadly, that's something you can't get with iTunes.

For me, it was the start of a life-long obsession with home improvement and renovations. I used to watch it when I was in high school, always dreaming of the day when I'd buy an old house to fix up myself. Like most things on television, the reality fell short of the dreams.

Years later, while working at Whole Foods, i had an opportunity to help Norm Abrams in the grocery department. He was so nice, so kind. Bob Vila, though, was quite different. He was aloof and seemed upset that he was recognized by customers and staff. He also kept stuffing his face with the smoke salmon samples set out at the seafood department.

Trying to strip our woodwork. We ended up stripping the varnish off the floors, nearly poisoning the cats, and ended up painting anyway when it was discovered that various pieces of the wood had been replaced over the years, all different species!
