Masonry screws are for concrete. For a brick wall, you should use a lead anchor with a standard sheet metal or wood screw. The anchors are sizeable, so you will need a margin around the screws that is hidden by the shelf or brackets. You can do it without a hammer drill, but you probably will need a corded drill or a few batteries worth of a cordless drill.
Hope this helps.

I cannot say I have ever attempted to make non-dairy ice cream from scratch, however a mashed up frozen banana is not as lame a substitution as it sounds.

Just to clarify, pressure treated wood is almost never used in kitchen cabinetry. While conventional, urea-formaldehyde binding agents in plywood can and do release VOCs, pressure treated wood is impregnated with Chromated Copper Arsenate, which is a biocide and preservative (generally considered much more dangerous). It is also worth noting there is a variety of readily-available no-added-formaldehyde plywood and particleboard products available. If you are interested, I recommend checking our Purekitchen.com

It's important to remember that while soy production at its current scale is certainly unsustainable, however the scale of production is fueled by the meat and dairy industry as livestock feed. If soy was actually substituted for meat at scale, then the net land use would be greatly reduced. This is not to say, however, that soy isn't overused within vegetable-based diets, as there is plenty more options available.

I might try to discourage you from using cedar or anything tropical, as Cedar has been felled to extinction in the U.S. and anything tropical is more than likely to harvested unsustainably. Even tree-farms are responsible for deforestation. A better option might be something like Trex, which is made from recycled plastic and has an extremely long lifespan.

I would discourage buying a teak bath mat solely because of the ecological implications. Teak is indisputably endangered and, because of the political condition of the regions where it grows, it goes largely under protected. I have to say I share your fondness for wood bath mats, but I'd say it's worth finding a more benign species or, if you have the energy, making it yourself from some exotic pallet wood.
