I think that's the first time in history of rain gutters someone has ever said "Those gutters made me smile!"

I vote for blue or green. Really, anything from yellow-green to blue-violet would work very well with the brick.

It's great to see someone from St. Louis on AT!

Good Questions: What Color Scheme Would Work Best for this Room?

Aerosol hairspray is my sustainability kryptonite. The cheaper, the better. Nothing works like the rattle cans. My addiction started in my young, punk-rockin, liberty-spiked and mohawked days which, ironically, also sparked most of my interest in environmentalism. Now my quarter-life crisis has me wearing a 'hawk, and i'm hooked again. I don't try to hide it though. I leave the giant cans of Aqua Net and Rave in plain view in the bathroom. The first step is admitting you have a problem.

I don't care what the buildings, site plans, landscaping, utility bills look like. A 3,100 square foot house is not green, unless there's 10 people living in it. Sure, a huge house in the 'burbs built of recycled materials is less un-green than one of all virgin materials, but seriously. SPRAWL IS NOT GREEN.

I grow basil, parsley, lavender, and lemon balm in pots on my balcony. For cooking, the only fresh I use regularly are basil and parsley. I plan to winter them indoors with a grow light. They need very little extra care, just water every day when it's really hot, and regular pruning/harvesting keeps them producing leaves.

I don't buy fresh herbs much at all. Maybe once or twice a year, when I need something that I don't grow.

I love it, especially the blue glass. I hear blue glass is hard to recycle into other glass things, anyway, so this is perfect use of it!

I like this DIY option. I'm going to copy it in my new apartment. With the board painted the same color as the wall, it's practically invisible. It would cost all of about $30, and only take a half hour or so to build.

I think I'd also add another board below, where the wheels rest to prevent marking up the wall. Maybe add a few more hooks or pegs at that height to hang helmets, panniers, and such.

"eat less red meat..."

And eggs, dairy, corn, wheat, and soy. They are all massive cash crops with a huge environmental toll. These are things that should be consumed in moderation at most, and always organic.

House Beautiful magazine ran a feature on Hartig's home a few years ago. I loved it, it was the first celebrity home that really intrigued and inspired me... I saved clippings of some of the photos in my design scrapbook. the new home is just as fabulous!

If there's a better way to do all the things a PC could do, fill me in. A dishwasher has a single purpose, unlike a computer.

Maybe I take water for granted, living at the confluence of the two largest rivers in north America, but I still don't think the small amount of water saved by having a machine do the job is a fair trade off for the other environmental costs.

Sure, a dishwasher uses less water, but it's also made of plastic and metal that are mined, shipped, processed, and assembled all over the world. Then the finished machine is sent to warehouses, distribution centers, and retail outlets. Is it worth all that fossil fuel burning, transportation mining and manufacturing to save a little water, which is an abundant, renewable resource? No, thanks. I'll hand wash.

I love the wall color. And the piano! Amazing that it fits, and works so perfectly, in the space.

It's not uncommon to spend half or more on housing here in St. Louis, especially for young people. It's inexpensive to live here overall, but wages are low too. The cost of owning property in the city and inner 'burbs is far more expensive than renting. The opposite is true in the outer suburbs--owning often costs less than renting. You can buy a lot of house for the money. That is, of course, provided that you don't mind vinyl siding, driving a car everywhere, and neighborhoods with no trees.

Awesome! This space is gorgeous!

I think that being a dorm room it qualifies more than some of the other entries I've seen--no budget gut rehabs, real estate ads, and professional designers' digs. It's a real living space, far more fabulous than my own, and I have a bathroom and kitchen.

Besides, how many entries have even included photos of the bath and kitchen, anyway? Does a tiny studio apartment with only a microwave and a tiny fridge count? Not that it matters, anyway. This entry is fantastic, one of the best by far.
