Wow. This room has great potential. I love the exposed beams. I just wanted to add my vote with the others who recommended leaving the paneling but painting the fireplace white, while replacing the carpet. Ditch the drapes too to add more natural light and replace the dated light fixture. I would also bring in a lot of white colored furnishings to lighten up the place even further. Plenty of us have provided aesthetic and preservationist arguments for not painting. Let me present two economic ones based on a quick cost benefit analysis: 1) Financial loss resulting from painting them > cost of redesigning the room around them, and 2) Money you would make for selling them > buying knock-0ffs you paint.
