Unused closet? I don't even have a freakin closet. Ah, Europe!

A Few Ways to Change It Up at Home for Under $10

Get rid of the ceiling fan, replace the light fixtures, replace the fireplace insert with something more modern, add a chunky mantle and large-scale art work, remove the bar counter and drywall over the pass thru. Paint the ceiling beams white and let the stone wall be the star of the room. Divide the space into two furniture groupings. Sofa and chairs and good reading lamps around the fireplace. Put the TV at the opposite end of the room with it's own sofa and chairs. I'm assuming you have a dining room elsewhere and don't need this space for a table. If you do, use this end of the room for table and chairs and mount the TV above the fireplace. Either go white or pull light gray tones from the stone for your wall color.

Very insightful post. Your thoughts on being a private person echo my own. I blogged for two years before even letting search engines in. Even now, only a few friends know my url (but it's here for strangers to click on).

I am considering photographing my whole house for family back home who will never be able to visit me in Germany. But nervous about what others will say/think. My house is messy. Always. Maybe because I'm here on AT instead of downstairs folding the laundry.

I would keep the wood table and use it as desk or work table in a guest room. Then when the IKEA on breaks, you have the option of moving that one in. Personally, I prefer the IKEA table, but that's only because it's round.

Save the good quality piece. You'll find a use for it some day.

Love the white paint, but something feels a bit off to me. Like the mantle is too high with not enough breathing room between it and the sconces. The disproportionate amt of space between mantle and the fireplace feels odd. Image it would be more pronounced if you put anything on the mantle.

Have to say I take issue with the Brooklyn Beer Kit. Apparently they have time to make a little video, but not type 3 lines to tell you what's in the kit. Is it an all-grain kit? Is it extract brewing? What's the batch size? Does it include carboy, air lock, hydrometer, etc? If not, that's not "everything to get you started on perfecting your own homebrew" as stated above.

Go to Northern Brewer, get a starter kit first unless you are buying for an experienced homebrewer. If you are, then get an all grain kit.

Ugh. When someone talks about something in the write up, can we please see it in the pictures!? Can barely see the chair, and where's this " tole chandelier spouting white lilies"?

Don't paint it! You'll be sad you did when you can't sell the house and end up living there much longer than expected.

good call on the crooked lines. Didn't notice that. Too busy staring at that tile and lamp that don't go at all.

I am shocked that someone paid $4K for that piece of art. Granted art is a very personal thing, but ick. $4000, really?

I can't believe the number of people who don't wash regularly. My jeans feel dirty on the third day, if they make it past two wears. I can't imagine 13 days w/o washing.

Here's a radical idea: buy another pair

@Barefoot: there are coral honeysuckles in this shade. They are uncommon. I agree on the color name. "Honeysuckle" should be a shade of yellow.

Love it. So many fantastic ideas. The kids' play table under the TV--what did that used to be? An ottoman? A table.

Tricky color palette. Attempting to make this room something it's not--modern. The best you can do is to hire a professional.

A design consultant can interpret your vision with a level of sophistication the current space lacks. A couple hundred bucks for a color consult, space/furniture plan and clear direction will cost a heck of lot less than the time, energy and money you'll spend making more mistakes.
