10 Tried & True Tips: How to Make New Friends in a New City
4/4/13 12:22 PM

All of my peeves have already been mentioned, most especially word art (unless you're a graphic designer and in love with fonts - then it's okay). So I'm not even going to bother contributing on that front, since it's all already been said many many times.

Mostly I'm here to defend clothing on display as art! I collect vintage clothing, and there are some things which are too fragile/not-my-size/fancy to wear on an everyday basis, but so special and beautiful that I'd like to appreciate them every day. So sometimes I'll hang 'em up on on a wall (out of direct sunlight, which can damage the fabric) or on a door, where I can enjoy them more than if they were just sitting in my closet. I know some women who will do the same with extra special designer pieces. For some people, clothing is art. Deal.

I do love my gallery wall, too! It might not be the most well-executed wall ever, but it's full of meaningful art that my husband and I both truly love, and we had fun putting it up.

Our refridgerator is ENCRUSTED with artwork and personal mementos that my husband and I both love. It makes me smile every single day. I adore scoping my friends' and family members' fridge art situations as well - they can be great snapshots of who lives there, and I think the look is FUN, not cluttered!

Also, I'd like to point out that the writer is not saying to put ALL your appliances behind closed doors: "Keep out only the essentials," i.e., what you use every day.

Not so long ago here in Buffalo, the FBI arrested a man whose neighbor was downloading very very VERY illegal and harmful material using his (the former's) WiFi. This material involved children. It is just not a good idea to share your WiFi, no matter how much you trust your neighbor. Be smart, lock it up.

Between Peaches' tour today and Dixie's tour yesterday, I am in decorating heaven at AT this week, and feeling so inspired. Finally, some house tours I can completely jive with. Viva la maximalism, la kitsch, la creativity, and la not giving a hoot about what other people think! AT, I'd love to see more tours in this vein.

(Oh, and I must add to chorus of admiration for the amazing Inigo Montoya velvet painting!)

Oh, hello dream house! So inspiring; thanks so much for sharing this!

Does anyone know anything about those big-eyed, 60s-looking Japanese dolls with the big hair (the dolls displayed in Amy's workroom)? I want one so badly but don't know what they're called. Thank you!

This place doesn't mesh with my personal style at all, and yet it's one of my favorite tours to date. I love everything, but the art is gorgeous and the kitchen gave me palpitations (the good kind). Oh, and the bathroom...

Aw, I can definitely understand why it's so difficult for you to part with this. The room is beautiful, and you were a very lucky girl to have had it! I've been dreaming about cabinet beds for years; they're dreamy (quite literally!). But as the person above me said, you'll have lots of fun creating your own space in the future and it will be every bit as wonderful. Perhaps you can use this room as inspiration for your own place some day!
