I would suggest exploring Instagram for European furniture designers/builders!

We get the majority of our clients from Instagram followers in the US. There are a lot great designers and builders in and around Germany. Instagram is great because it allows you to view their work and interact with them. - modern/industrial - Scan/modern

You could run a shelf the length of the wall just below the opening to arrange photos, art and other objects. That would allow you to balance out the large piece that would have to go in front of the opening.

That being said, the cheapest route is likely to patch the hole.

A great option for a space you are not sure about is a painted area rug. I know it sounds crazy! Here is how I did it.

I opted for a $0 project, so used left over paint I had. For a large rug you need 1 gallon for the base. The accents can easily be done with small amounts of paint. The best part about painting a rug is you can change it whenever you want for very cheap.

I am working on a new outdoor one for our porch.

I agree with IKEA. My first house was a 1918 Sear Roebuck box bungalow. It was tiny (740 square fee). IKEA pieces that were modular were my saving grace. They are priced right, durable, and easy to change the look with a small investment in another slip cover!

I make a lot of lights for work and this style is very very prone to bulbs breaking. The energy consumption alone is big issue...they also let off a lot of heat. This look is really hard to achieve without giving up being eco friendly.

My advice here is less is more. I would rethink the design a bit. Stay with three and possibly add a cage to keep the bulbs from breaking. You can paint the cage to create the look you want.

Here is an example of a easy to use cage.

I think as long as the two sides are balanced it will look great.

A really easy way is to lay the smaller photos/art from the side opposite the mirror on top of the mirror laying down on the table. It the surface area is about the same you are balanced!

Another trick I like to use for layout is cutting out paper bags (or any paper) in the size of each piece and using painters tape to attach to the wall. That way you can step back to view. Better mark where the nails to be by poking a hole in the paper! When you find the layout you like pound the nail through the paper!

A light sanding (with the wood grain) and oil can go a long way. It would be a shame to paint over the nice wood.

Tung oil or Danish oil would breath life back into the piece!
