If I can pass any gems of wisdom along from my hypertufa experiences,
1. Make sure you thouroughly mix the cement, perlite and peat moss. If not, the pots will crumble.
2. Pour the cement in the mixing bucket first, the other materials are so light it is hard to mix properly if the cement is weighing them down.
3. If you plan on making a lot of pots invest in a mixing attachment for your handheld drill, it made all the difference in the world.

I have been running around from nursery to nursery lately trying to plan up my garden and empty my wallet :)
I found some great nurseries in the Southbay and Westside as I search for the perfect outdoor fountain!
One is in Marina Del Rey, it is right as the 90 freeway dumps into the Marina. This is the place to go for a variety of succulents. I took these photos there:

The second one I like is called Moneta nursery in Gardena. It has the BEST selection of grown trees and vine growing plants.
My third find is the armstrong in torrance. They have the biggest variety of fruit trees I have seen at a nursery.
As you can see I have been nursery stalking lately ;)

We have been trying to turn our yard into a more desirable place for entertaining and relaxing before summer hits. The key for us was first to build a fence that provided more privacy and was gated off. Second was to plant a lot of different fruit bearing plants and foilage.
If we have kids while we live in this house I love the idea of putting in a sand box and tree house/fort in the yard. I also love what my aunt has done with her son: they save seeds from all the fruit/veggies they eat and plant them in their backyard during spring time. They have been really succesful at growing their own plants/food. Plus my 5 year old cousin is so proud of his gardening skills.
Good luck with the yard! Here is where we currently are with our yard:

I literally just built flower boxes along the outside of my fence and lines them with succulents...it looks so much like the first picture. I even posted it on my blog under the "evolution of the fence" post.

I like the first one, and anything would be an upgrade from the current headboard that was given to us for free.

We recently built a privacy fence around our front yard that look has a modern shipping pallet feel.

I was thinking of trying to integrate flower boxes that hang off, or use woolly pockets (felt bags) to create a vertical garden. This post gives me some ideas, Thanks!

What a great idea with the pallet garden! My husband and I just finished building planters into our fence tonight... similar to the pallet feel!

I love the island and the way you opened up the space! That is a fast reno, Our kitchen took us about 3 months... Its been a year and a half since we finished and I finally got around to posting our Before and Afters! Great JOB!

I completely agree with elankat:

"it will take 3 times as long and 5 times as many hardware store trips as you think. "

At the end of our renovation I felt like we were living at homedepot!

One thing that saved us was a crockpot, even though the kitchen was tore apart we could still enjoy a "home cooked" meal.
