My fiance loves green smoothies, so upgrading to an absurdly expensive blender (vitimix) is our biggest ticket item

Upgrade-Worthy: 5 Cheap Household Items Worth Replacing (When You Can)

Shelly, have I got the perfect solution for you! I just moved into a new condo and was facing the same issue. Barring any sort of solution that involves replacing the shelves (I'm a newlywed, so I'm all about saving money), you should totally TOTALLY hang an oar there.

I was fortunate enough to stumble across a vintage wooden oar at a garage sale for $5, and using some simple hooks hung it horizontally over the TV. It adds a warm wood texture while nodding at nautical and would totally fit in the space pictured without pulling too much focus from the gallery wall.

Mine looks vaguely like this, just with warmer wood with various hues. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qVUoD9EHNdY/SmTaG1Zpq-I/AAAAAAAAJFQ/LyZqbzpHp-U/s400/hanging-an-oar.JPG

The best part? the whole thing can be pulled off whilst spending well less than $50. Check out this oar -- looks similar to the one I got (Still a little bit lighter wood, though).

Good luck! If you try this you won't regret it. I can't believe how awesome mine turned out. I talk about it so much my wife had to ask me to tone down my "public displays of (verbal) affection" for the oar.
