I'm almost just like you. I like the TV on for background noise and I will put something on I've seen before if I don't want it to distract me (Everybody Loves Raymond...). The only difference is I actually like the commercials. For some strange reason, they make me feel connected. When I'm watching on Netflix, I feel like I'm alone watching. When I watch live TV, I feel like I'm part of the collective of TV viewers. Sounds stupid, but there you go. I tried to ditch cable and I found that in addition to missing the commercials, I missed that I could come home and just turn on the TV and leave whatever was on. With Netflix, you have to consciously choose something to watch. I found myself watching too much (marathons!) instead of having it in the background.

I don't get how this is even a debate, as every laundromat I have ever been in is just gross. Even the ones that try to be upscale still have dirty, gross, inconsiderate people doing their wash there. Globs of detergent, powder everywhere (who uses powder anymore??), dye in the machines, sticky folding tables. No, thank you. I did it from 1994 to 2012 and I would NEVER be without a washer and dryer again. I haven't had a dishwasher in that same amount of time (still don't) and, while I would like to have one (and I will), I can wait. Doing dishes at home, in my own sink, in my pajamas is WAY better than ever going to the laundrofreakingmat.

I seriously don't get the Eames chairs. They look institutional! Just because they are Eames, that makes them fantastic? Jeeze.

That said, I like just about everything else about this apartment. Especially the kitchen and eating area with those funky flowered chairs. THOSE deserve the love. The plastic Eames hospital waiting room chairs? Yuck.

I downloaded an app for my phone from Google Play called StopWatch & Timer+ that allows you to set up timer chains. I made a group that has a 10 second countdown, then the 30/10 intervals. The whole thing will run with one button touch so you can focus on the exercises. Only the + version has this feature and it cost 99 cents.

When I lived in a small apartment, the only place I could put the litter box was in the kitchen. I know. Gross. I found a dust free litter and it really wasn't too bad. The thing I want to suggest is the Litter Locker. No one entering my home would ever know I have a cat because the Litter Locker is so great. It's like a Diaper Genie for cats. I tried using the plastic bags from the pet store and throwing his business in my regular garbage. EW. Not acceptable. The Litter Locker is odor free. I sound like a commercial, but seriously. It's that good. Oh, and clean the box once a day. Don't be lazy! Your cat does not like a dirty box and if you don't keep it clean, they may decide to go elsewhere.

I hung crown molding myself in a small room with the entry door on an angle that wasn't 45 degrees. I was so proud. I started to the right of the door and went around the room counter clockwise. Every piece fit perfectly after using scrap to get the angles just right. I got all the way around the room and when I put up the last piece I had about a half inch gap where the corner was supposed to meet. There was no way I was tearing it down, so I bought some Bondo (the stuff used in auto collision shops) and sculpted a new corner using a credit card to smooth and shape. I sanded and painted it and you would never know, except I have a big mouth and point it out to everyone.

@segacs:
I lived in an apartment with those ugly wood printed melamine kitchen cabinets. I got approval from my landlord to paint them. I just used BIN - it's available in your local home improvement store and it sticks to anything - melamine included. It's a primer, but since it was white and looked so good on it's own, I didn't paint a color over it. I didn't even have to sand (or scuff) the cabinets. Just clean them and go.

If you're crafty enough to make your own roman shades, you're capable of switching out your own light fixture without an electrician as long as you know where the breaker is. It's ridiculously easy.

You might try searching for pics of cool dorm rooms, only because they're typically shared spaces. Maybe you will find some cool layouts to spark your imagination.

I feel like the only one who doesn't see the appeal to open shelving in the kitchen. To me it looks so cluttered. I get it for, maybe, a restaurant kitchen, but for a kitchen in your own home? Nope.

I love it! I think it would look even MORE awesome if that pink was added as an accent skinny stripe on the curvy parts of the front faces.

I used to live in a little duplex apartment. My bedroom was upstairs and had the slanty ceiling/walls of a cape and a wood floor that had seen better days. I painted the floor (with my landlord's permission) a nice gray color using deck paint. It came out great and was very durable. I lived there 3 years and there wasn't a single scratch - even with dragging furniture around.

I never moved to a new city, but I found my friends dwindled due to life - marriage and family, while I stayed single. You end up being the third wheel and it's not fun. So late into my 20s, I was alone a lot. I joined jiu jitsu and made a lot of great friends. Once my 30 something body got tired of taking hits, I joined a pool league and made even more great friends. So my advice is to join something - any activity that you like will inevitably result in some new friendships. Now, if I feel like going out, I can always find somewhere to go where everybody knows my name. And they're actually glad I came ;)

I voted for Sarah's room. I entered the room for color contest and, while I'm not surprised I didn't get a ton of votes, I was annoyed that it was more a popularity contest. One of the rooms with the most votes was posted by a blogger who has a ton of followers that she funneled to AT. I guess I would do it too if I had the means, but it doesn't make for a very fair contest. The room wasn't all that special. I will not enter one of AT's contests again.

I've done my dishes by hand since 1994 when I left for college. I finally bought my first house in 2011, but gutted my kitchen immediately and threw out the nasty dishwasher that came with the place. I am SO excited though that, when I finally do put my kitchen back together again, I WILL have a dishwasher! I despise doing dishes. I waste a ton of water because I leave it running the whole time, so I can't imagine running a cycle a week or so would be any worse, aside from the added electrical usage. Whatever. Hand washing blows. Can't wait!
