Home ownership would have been out of reach for me on Long Island had I not had help from the Long Island Housing Partnership. Buying my crappy house was the best thing I ever did. Single. Female. Happy :D

It's like neighbor Russian roulette. You never know who's going to move in below/above/next door. After two years of quiet, I had the neighbor from hell move in below me. No need to go into all of that. One thing I did on my own was get an air purifier. I would run that on high and it did a pretty good job of drowning out the bass below. With white noise, your brain eventually blocks it out so it wasn't disruptive to me. I actually sleep with a noisy air purifier now. I like the whoosh.

This is a good tip to save on storage, but not dish washing. You're washing the same amount of dishes, just smaller amounts more often.

I should have clarified - attached neighbors. Ones who share walls. And parking too, for that matter. (Ever spend two hours digging out your car after a snow storm only to find your neighbor never picked up a shovel and just drove out of his and into yours?) I finally have my own house. Sure, there can be issues with neighbors anywhere, but attached neighbors are way worse. Getting bedbugs from one of them was the last straw.

I LOVE living alone. None of these on this list bother me. In fact, here's a list of why it's GREAT!.
1. No one eats the leftover cheesecake I brought home from last night's dinner out.
2. Everything is where I leave it.
3. The TV remote is mine. (My cat likes Walking Dead too)
4. I do what I want. If I'm lonely, I go out.
5. Peace. And. Quiet. Ahhhhhhhhh

The worst thing about renting is NEIGHBORS. Awful people who think that, just because they pay rent, they can do whatever they want and you can suck it. I never minded my apartment, but I wished my neighbors herpes on a regular basis.

I used a laundromat for about 13 years. In one of my apartments, the local laundromat had very affordable wash/fold service. The downside? A favorite dress of mine went missing. I don't think it was intentional - they just have so many customer's laundry going at the same time. Mistakes are bound to happen. So, my tip would be if you really care about a specific item and would be sad to lose it, don't let it out of your sight. Either hand wash it or do your own laundry.

What a great picture to pick for this article. I remember this tour. It is definitely WAY too intense for me, but it's obvious she loves it. Good for her. And good for me too. I do what I want! If people don't like it, I couldn't care less.

I rented for 14 years before buying My Crappy House. I was a great tenant, but horrible renter. I have zero tolerance for people. EVERYONE IS SO INCONSIDERATE! When you share walls, I believe you should consider your neighbors. I am apparently in the minority. I will never share walls again. NEVAH!

The pro painter's advice is sort of what I was thinking. A bit of solvent on a Q-tip. I wouldn't sand with that texture. You're likely to make it stand out even more.

I love the 2nd room, but I'd take it one step further and paint the ceiling a darker color. The white looks too stark next to the richness of the rest.

I'm all for new and fun desk chair designs because this girl SITS all day at a desk. Standing desks are a fad, just like those ergonomic desk chairs that had people kneeling at their desks. I don't know any real people who stand at a desk all day. Like carolineemma said, desk chairs are far from "passe". Bring on the prints!
