Brilliant! I live in a former school building, and my window sills are almost a foot deep. I have no southern exposure, so right now they're all white, but I woyld live to try something like this. Best part is, it's only paint. If it doesn't work, back to white!

Where do you take a fire extinguisher to get it recharged? If it can't be recharged, where do you take it for safe disposal?

Excellent advice! But in #4, I think you mean "refuge," not "refuse"!

Fabulous! Although I could never afford this exact home and location, the vibes of the tile floors, dark but not heavy wooden furnishings, off-white and terracotta linens, are certainly achievable. My next home will have all tile floors, I just decided!

First I'd call a local outfit that recovers old building materials. Here in my part of Connecticut we have Urbanminers. You may have someone like that who will deconstruct the pine panelling if he thinks he can find a buyer for it.

Wholeheartedly agree! I lived with builder's beige (I thought of it as renter's beige) my whole life, even in the house I owned for 25 years, tempered with lots of books and artwork. Now I'm in a one-bedroom condo, with steel-beam construction that makes hanging pictures much more problematic, so it's all about color. In four rooms I ran down an entire Benjamin Moore paint strip, and I love it.

Hire the pros. Or sell them and buy new/used when you get to your new place.

Heavy Lifting: How Did You Move The Big Stuff?

I admired the way you've separated the sleeping and living spaces without resorting to walls or curtains, which would block the small amount of natural light. I just moved to a place with a few more than your 2 windows, but they all face northeast or northwest. I like what you've done with the mirrors, to bounce as much light around as possible.

I tried sleeping on a futon for a few months. Its not as comfortable as it looks. If you want your guests to come back, get a regular mattress and put it on a platform or slat bed frame.

Love it! I wish I could vote more than once. I have family in Dallas, and I know the neighborhood you're talking about. I, too, am trying to live the walkable urban lifestyle, with a farmers market within walking distance, and I know how much harder that is to do in car-dependent Dallas. Bravo and best wishes to you!

I'm a biblioholic, so I am always amuse by photos of bookshelves that have very few actual books on them. Mine are stuffed from end to end and I can always use more. To me, good bookcase design means having enough so that no books are piled on the floor. We all have our priorities, and I'm sure I will use all these suggestions when I want to sell, but right now I'm living here.

Craigslist. Check. Real estate sites. Check. Thank you for the reminder. I need to stop second guessing myself and follow through with my commitment to live small indoors and live large outdoors.

You don't "rent" books from the library, you "borrow" them. But the point is well-taken.

I have Amazon, Hulu+, and Netflix all, and my monthly video bill is still far lower than cable tv would be.
