Hey there. Last Christmas, I hosted a cookie swap and one of our 'activities' was to make our own Mason Jar snow globes. They are super easy to put together and fun. You can find the mini trees and fake snow at any craft store this time of year. The rest of the details I found around the house/craft bin.

Interesting to me how very different and unlived in this feels. Amazing that you can glean that sense just from the photos. It's kind of like looking at a magazine spread. But, very pretty. On the whole, however, I prefer to look at how people have arranged their living spaces for real life.

Hi There. I agree with many of the comments above and wanted to add my two cents.

This is the 'gateway' to your home, as you note, I'm focus on keeping it welcoming and uncluttered. Try removing the bookshelf and desk and then only re-introduce the items that really, really make you feel welcomed and relaxed.

An area rug would really help bring unity to this room. Target has 4x6 rugs on sale for $14.99 right now, i'm not kidding.

Also, we've ditched the desk concept and actually have our iMac (identical to yours) on a short cabinet. It's now more like a library terminal, and since we don't spend hours at teh computer while at home, it keeps us on our feet for quick searches or browsing. And minimizes the space (the cabinet doubles for storage) Desks are kind of out moded, I think. Maybe instead of the bookshelf, create a bookshelf high on one wall, preferably the back wall, to draw the eye in and up. More like an installation plaing with the colors and shapes of the books rather than as a utilitarian thing. I love books and think they're great to have around, but they do create clutter very easily if not monitored heavily (haha).

And I agree, a landing strip is a must...maybe that's where you could put the computer too?

Welcome to Chicago and art school! You're going to love it. Don't let this scammer throw you off the city. I agree that there are many fun/funky places to live in the city. I take blule line train in every day with art students who clearly live further out. Enjoy your time here and your studies. Good luck!

The birch wall paper and the intracacy of the quilt (not to mention the scale of the mirror) are competing. I'd suggest you forgo the detailed wallpaper. OR, move the bed to a solid colored wall and let the wallpaper provide a contrast to the blue side table and a chair.

As for color, our guest room is slate/gray and it is really very calming and not depressing. however, we have three windows and west-facing exposure, so that probably explains it.

I'm reminded of the Coco Chanel quote: “Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror, and remove one piece of jewelry.”

The room would benefit from some editing. Focus on one star element (the quilt methinks) and play it up. Incorporate colors from it around the room, etc. The mirror and the detailed wallpaper distract.

good luck! you're on a roll.

It is beautiful, i'm partial to rectangle tables though. Ours is the 90" Big Sur from Crate & Barrel, http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/dining-tables/big-sur-90.5%22-dining-table/s181269
Very much us, and less refined than the one you have here. I would also struggle with pairing it with chairs. You might have to go with a big contrast for chairs, which may date it. Good luck and congratulations on yoru upcoming marriage!

If you have this level of anxiety, perhaps you should install a peep hole. I think neighborly relations are evermore important and to be encouraged (especially in the next generation).

Wow - I have the same microwave...in my storage space. We seldom use it and I hate how much space it takes up. Really, there aren't too many things you can't re-heat on the stove.

First: Your boyfriend did a great job. His enthusiasm and engagement should be applauded methinks. And your collaborative spirit too.

In my opinion, I'd take @rlmesq's idea about the long curtain rod to hang or swag above the bed to soften that wall (unless you have a fabric thing). Also, I think two matching pendant lights dropping from the ceiling like the funky bedroom here http://www.timberlakelighting.com/news/tag/pendant-lighting/

you've inspired me to fix my own bedroom lighting issue too. Thanks!
