Eek! This is so exciting. We live in Northwest Arkansas, and have been known to make trips to Dallas just for Ikea (5.5 hours). But KC is a modest 3.5 hours drive, and has Trader Joes! Yes, this is wonderful news.

We have a very similar ledge along our stairwell, which we use for our library. My husband built in bookcases specific to the space, and we put the ones we seldom need at the furthest end that is too high to reach without some kind of step stool. The only problem we have is that the kids like to pull the books off the shelves and leave them stacked on the stairs.

I used to be like many of those commenting, believing that kids should be taught safety rules rather than preventing opportunity. From an early age, we taught my oldest son how to navigate the stairs safely. Fast forward to my younger son being diagnosed with Von Willebrand Disease (a bleeding disorder similar to hemophilia), and my attitude towards safety and expectations has drastically changed. He is 2 and we still keep the baby gate up, and until he is old enough to understand the potential consequences of a fall for him (ER visit and IV infusions), we aren't allowing him to navigate stairs without direct supervision.

All of this is to say that there is no one solution or safety guideline that applies to all kids. You need to do what will work best for your individual family, not necessarily what works for others.

I use mine to cover bread dough during fermentation, over pans of leftover baked goodies like fruit crisps, and pretty much anything else that needs a cover and has no lid.

My husband always brings me shower caps from his hotel stays on business trips, which is an act of true love since most of the time he has to ask for them at the front desk (and always gets awkward glances to his balding buzz-cut hair).

I handwash them with the dishes, and airdry them by hanging them from an upper cabinet knob. I have yet to wear a hole through any of the plastic, but the elastic does eventually lose its stretch.

I make mine a pound a time, simmering on the stove top. I freeze whatever I don't plan to eat in the next few days in 2 qt plastic storage containers I keep from bulk liquids (honey, olive oil, etc) purchased at our local natural foods store. I usually fill the container with the beans, and then add the cooking liquid until it covers the beans, then it's into the freezer. If I am planning ahead, I thaw them in the fridge for 1-2 days, but the microwave also works. I've never had a problem with them seeming waterlogged or mushy.

Sloppy Lentils are a family favorite. Once upon a time, I blogged the recipe here:

We are still making them and loving them.

My go-to road trip snack is a bag of sugar snap peas. They provide the crunch-factor of chips, the (slight) sweetness of candy, and even if you eat the entire bag in one sitting, you'll still feel good about it :-)

Greek Gods honey yogurt is a favorite treat. I especially love it in place of ice cream or whipped cream for strawberry shortcake.

I went completely dairy-free for 6 months when I discovered my baby had a very sensitive dairy intolerance. And then he outgrew it! I am still doing the happy dance.

Your day will come too, but until then, know that I am loving my yogurt (and cream in my coffee, butter on my toast, and cheese on my plate) and thinking of you :-)

I bought mine from Wal Mart.

I use it like the 5 ways mentioned above, but I also will sprinkle it directly onto chrome fixtures in the bathroom and polish it off with a damp rag. It removes all of the mineral deposits and grime and leaves the surface extra shiny.

I just got over the flu a little over a week ago, and, let me tell you, it was rough. I have a nearly-three year old and a 9 month old, both boys. The first few days of it my husband came home early from work and then it was the weekend, but on Monday my husband left for a week-long business trip and I still ended up being very sick that entire week.
Luckily, my mom lives nearby and works at a preschool teaching 2 1/2 year olds, so my oldest spent a day with her beore he came down with the flu as well.
At that point, we dragged the couch in front of the computer (since we don't own a tv) and watched countless episodes of Caillou and Thomas the Train (hurray for Netflix...). My mom came over after work and did things like making us soup, bringing in loads of wood for the fire, and keeping the pets fed.
So, tv programs were the answer for my toddler, but it was especially rough for my baby who is used to a lot more entertainment than my son and I were able to provide for him.
I am keeping my finger's crossed that nothing like that hits us again this winter.

While I haven't tried the Blames, we did purchase the Keekaroo high chair, which is very similar to the Stokke Tripp Trapp, but isn't as expensive. Our second baby is now using it and we are still loving it.

This is hilarious. Even if it does work, I'm not sure I'd want to cook with a hunk of bread poking out of my mouth...

Then again, I'd love to see my hubby's reaction if he walked in the door after work and saw me cooking this way.

Funny funny funny.

Yum. This is my all-time favorite meal. Nothing says comfort to me like a bowl of chicken n' dumplings.

I just made a large pot of it for dinner Saturday night before we all went to the Christmas parade. It was a chilly night, and the soup was perfect.

I make mine very similarly to the ideas here, except this past weekend, I made it with (the last of) our Thanksgiving turkey leftovers. It's just as tasy with the turkey as chicken. I also tossed in some chopped kale just before adding the dumplings. Yum yum yum.
