I love an updated plaid! These are great examples. I actually have some additional examples from my post "Revenge of the Tartans" on my blog Riot for Design: http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/10/revenge-of-tartans.html
Check it out if you need more plaid!

Carrie, I absolutely love your apartment! I was eying those hot pink lucite trays, and very impressed to see that you had them created! I'd love more info on how you made that happen!

I would definitely recommend putting the bed against the west wall so it's close to the bathrooms and closet- definitely the most practical option. You could then place a couch at the foot of the bed and create your living area facing the east wall, with another seating area by the large windows on the north wall.

I live in a loft, and found that the Ikea Expedit shelves are a perfect solution for dividing a undefined space without losing the openness and sense of space by putting up walls. Here's a few pics of my apartment as an example: http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/06/life-is-grand.html

Good luck!

A sequined Bloom Theory camera strap is on my Christmas list... well my "Christmas in July" list, that is (http://www.riotfordesign.blogspot.com/search/label/Christmas)!

I can totally relate to this post! As someone who has a full-time job, is training for a marathon, and just started a design blog (www.riotfordesign.blogspot.com) I feel like I never have any time anymore! I've started running home from work to get my miles in during "commute" time. But I'm not giving up my TV time... Oh I wish sleep weren't such a necessity!

Barcelona is fantastic! Definitely tour all the Gaudi structures your schedule will allow- they are all amazing.

I'd recommend La Manual Alpargatera- a shoe shop in the Barri Gotic where they sell handmade espadrilles.

Also, go see the flagship Zara on the Passeig de Gracia- it sells homewares, unlike the U.S. stores

Finally, Quimet e Quimet is a tiny tapas bar. I believe it's highly regarded but relaxed and very authentic!

Oh I wish I were on my way back there right now!!!

I can totally relate, Linz. I moved back in with my parents at 25 in order to start a new career. Some of the people posting are really harsh- it's not easy to take this step, whether it be back, as you see it, or forward, as you will in the future! Better to live at home and not incur debt!

But the home decor thing... I was right there with you. My advice is similar to many here: make your room your sanctuary and the rest of the house motivation to push you toward your goal. Go Pinterest crazy "decorating" your future apartment/home. Good luck!

Thanks for this! I, too, just started a design-related blog. The field is definitely saturated, and of course AT sets the gold standard, but I think one way to set a blog apart is through a unique voice and writing style. Since I work in comedy TV, I try to incorporate humor into the blog, while still keeping the focus primarily on design. I hope I'm succeeding! www.riotfordesign.blogspot.com

Definitely agree with the regular posting though- blogging is not easy! I've learned firsthand that f you want a successful blog you definitely have to put in the work!

Of course I would!... when I met my husband he didn't really have a sense of style which was actually great because he does have great taste so I just helped "polish" him a bit. I think if the person is inflexible, that, rather than their sense of style would be the dealbreaker! Design challenges are GOOD because they push you out of your comfort zone, so I say an opposing viewpoint is great!

Such a charming, playful and exuberant home! I love the bold, graphic elements and the Buddha sculpture is rockin! I actually just did a round-up of Buddhas used in design on my blog (http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/07/tuesday-trend-buddas.html) and wish I could have included this one!

I couldn't agree more- I was always a creative child but felt selfish and frivolous in pursuing it as a career. It's taken me 30 years to overcome this sentiment, but over that time I have surrounded myself with creative people in my career and am finally tackling my own creative endeavors in my design blog: www.riotfordesign.blogspot.com

I finally feel like I'm doing what I was meant to do! It's so nice to be more than a spectator!

How to Build Your Creative Confidence

Ugh, I know the feeling! (here's a pic of my unfortunate rental kitchen: http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/06/pb-loft.html)

I think you have 2 reasonable options: the first is to just live with it- add a fun red & turquoise rug and some cute accessories. The second option is to try to negotiate with your landlord- maybe you can convince them to let you paint, which wouldn't cost that much.

I've been skeptical of the "temporary" cabinet cover options just because I wonder how temporary they really are and how durable/stain resistant. However, it seems some people are really happy with this option so it might be worth a try!

Go BOLD with a chartreuse accent wall behind the bed and then do the other walls in a beige-y peachy color to keep things bright. Dark walls in a basement are going to feel cavernous!

Wall Color To Complement Bedding? Good Questions

This apartment looks like a show stopper! I think as long as you float your living area furniture you'll be golden. Make the windows the focal point and perhaps use some large bookcases as a room divider between your sleeping area and living space (perhaps you can place/hang on the structure too). Here's my studio apartment with an example of shelving as a room divider: http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/06/life-is-grand.html

BUT the bed area HAS to go by the closets and the bathroom. You'll drive yourself nuts walking across the entire apartment every morning or middle of the night.

I have been loving purple too lately! If done right, it can look so luxe and is a great entree into color from a neutral palette. I just made a post on purple a few weeks ago :) Check it out! http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/06/purp.html

Couldn't agree with you more on the pillows AND the Keep Calm signs. I'd also add perfectly symmetrical styling- as someone who works in production I can say that stylists do this for commercials where they want the room to NOT STAND OUT in any way, so I always find it funny when people style their homes this way. Also can't stand the everything MCM. It's the room equivalent of a costume!

But I do think it's impossible to avoid all trends in your home- I, for one, am guilty of the color-coded book shelves and the gallery wall, but they are meaningful and practical to me in my home. I think that's the most important thing! Here's a couple pics of my space: http://riotfordesign.blogspot.com/2012/06/life-is-grand.html

Ugh some people are so nasty...

Maybe a pair of Flight Recliners by DWR? They're a bit expensive too, but in the same vein.

OR, you could get a very basic minimalist love seat and one of the flight recliners to achieve a similar effect.

Sigh- I did this with the Paolo Piva Alanda coffee table (B&B Italia, 1982). After scouring Google Images for "pyramid coffee table" I finally found it... out of production and on 1st Dibs for several thousands. Perhaps some day one will find it's way to me :)

Great post!

I purchased a clutch as a gift and a tray for myself. The tray was very large and had some imperfections in the design so I was a bit disappointed, but not enough to return. The clutch looks cute and I know my sister will love it!

I'm always skeptical of Target quality, and when I saw some items at my local target, I wasn't surprised to see that the towels looked extremely thin and the tights were polyester and cheap-looking. I think kitchenware was the best way to go with Missoni for Target! It sold out first and not a thing was leftover at the store!

I have an equally tiny rental BR with a pedestal sink (so no under sink storage). I use hanging wire baskets for towels, an over-the-door shelf w/ Ikea metal bins.

My latest bathroom storage solution is a 6 ft. tall vintage gym locker I found on Ebay (only about 1 foot wide). It has 6 cubbies, three of which I am removing the doors to, so it will use height to store all our things, with space for display and it fits nicely in a tight corner.
