And thanks shannaberube, I think you're right: "Emphasis on simple and plain, because it goes with the very plain cabinets and is inoffensive enough that our landlords don't mind."

Thanks everyone. You have great suggestions (I didn't even think about Ikea) and thoughts; I'll definitely keep mulling this over.

And don't worry landlords-- my landlord at the place is actually a family member and has given me explicit permission to look into this as long as she gets veto power. I'm planning on staying here for at least four years for grad school, so I want to make it really feel like home.

I'm so glad to see a kitchen that manages to address those dreaded 'apartment cabinets' without painting or removing them. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with them in my own place, so this is nice to see.

My bed is a placeholder, as well as my super-wobbly bedside table. Both were basically free and I'm moving next year, so I'm dealing with them for now.
