Oh and like others said, make sure you check with the company who has a pallet out back. If it isn't 48"x40" (the most common size), its likely a custom sized pallet and can get pricey. Plus, they can be in a lease/pool system, sending them in for repairs, or a local picker makes a living off them.

Best start to look for pallets online will be palletpages.com. You'll be able to find more local shops that will sell in low quantities. I work for a pallet company and we only sell in truck loads but we field a lot of DIYers looking for pallets.

Make sure you ask for heat treated hardwood. Due to a lumber shortage, a lot of companies are starting to use softwoods and they will not last as long in the environment.
