I am looking at a similar problem (wall to wall cheap nasty carpet) in an apartment. I'm going to try a large dhurrie rug (a flat weave rug, still very thick). I think having the flat weave will contrast against the pile of the carpet and not look odd like having a high pile rug on top of pile carpet would. This is just my aesthetic preference, of course. I've been looking at West Elm and Overstock.com and they each have a good selection of dhurries. Best of luck!
