Um, I just get mine at Goodwill and Salvation Army, because everything breaks very easily in porcelain sinks. No one ever complains about the wine glass or the wine. Life is short and there lots of charities who could really use that $125 (a glass!) How to Shop for Wine Glasses: Low, Mid & High |

I haven't been able to spend Thanksgiving with my family in years, as they live so far away. This is the first year that friends have invited me to join their family. I have never appreciated an invitation so much. In the South, we would always make sure people with families far away would have a place at our table. 5 Tips to Help New Thanksgiving Guests Feel at Home |

Please don't do this "with your children at home." I've been teaching for 15 years and research shows that children under the age of middle school are really not developmentally ready to deal with issues like this. Teach them that people all deserve to be treated equally, yes. And I'm not saying shelter them from the reality of the world, but a young child's mind is not ready to process things like child labor and slavery. What is the Slavery Footprint of Your Kitchen? |

When I buy a jar, I immediately put it upside down in the cupboard for a few days, until I use it. The plastic seal will prevent leakage. When you take it out to use it, no stirring needed ever again, unless you don't use it for a month or so. Learned this from my upstairs neighbor! Sorry, but I think articles like this are not based on fact, but on someone's ideal. The "local" grocery stores here don't sell local food. The local markets do, and it's way more expensive than mass-produced organic stuff (Earthbound Farms, etc.) The farmer's markets are no cheaper than the local markets. Personally I buy at the local markets what I don't grow myself, but I can afford to because of other things I give up--but that doesn't mean local is cheaper. Obviously Mr. Bittman has never tasted my homemade crust. I rarely eat pie that I didn't bake because I am a crust snob. I usually try a little flake of the crust first if I'm at a party--sorry, it sounds horrible, but I'd rather use my calories elsewhere if the crust is going to be the "tasteless, dry" mess described. My crust is flaky, delicious, and a wonderful accompaniment to the gooey pie filling. Mmmm. Mark Bittman Disses Pie |

It's been suggested that I try no-poo, but I swim in the ocean a few times a week and my hair gets very, very salty= itchy and tangled. I use sulfate-free shampoo and cond. and only shampoo about twice a week. It's been a lot better for my hair, especially since as I age, it has become drier. How to Go "No 'Poo" in 5 Easy Steps |

Ha, this is also very good for your hair. I often find too-ripe avocados at the market and ask for them for free--usually they are happy to get rid of them. I swear by the vinegar/soap/plastic wrap or funnel trick. I use any kind of vinegar, but apple cider or red wine works best. Also, I keep fruit clippings in the freezer until they can be taken to the compost pile or in the fridge in the pig slop bucket--never in the trash, then the flies will emerge from the fruit when the larvae become adults.
