I find that if I am watching die hard the wrapping goes a lot faster. I also love home for the holidays (which I know is thanksgiving and not christmas, but still)

I agree with some of the others. I am in the market for a new table for my daughter, but this one, as cute as it is, simply does not seem worth the money. it really does look too much like a lack table (and yes, I am staring at a lack table right now, it is in the corner of my family room tucked in between a couple of couches, it really does look a lot alike, finish snazzy finish aside), obviously bigger, but also 20 times the price...

ikea really needs to get into the play table business (and I know they have a couple, but not enough).

we start putting decorations up the day after thanksgiving and we take them down either the day after new year's day or the weekend after (depending on vacation time). it was the way we did it when I was growing up and the way I now do it with my own family.

richard scarry's best word book was one of my favorite books growing up and my daughter loves her copy almost as much as I loved mine (mine was not in good enough shape to pass along). I think we might need some of those mini characters in our christmas stockings this year.

the busy world of richard scarry and busytown mysteries are two of the only shows that I can stand to watch over and over again. and I agree that the kids' streaming selection on netflix is one of their best features. if only they would add charlie and lola...

agree--the chair is great but the baby in the ramones tee and bunny slippers is adorable!

I changed my study into the nursery and I tried to reuse some of the things that I had already in there, including a loveseat with a white slipcover. it worked perfectly. you can curl up on it--it was comfy for late night feedings and is still the best spot for reading books together.

I have an ikea sniglar which I used a non-ikea crib mattress for and didn't have any problems.

and I will point out, if anyone is worried about how the ikea cribs wear, that my daughter is over 2 years old and big for her age (36 inches and 35 pounds) and she loves to jump in her crib and run back and forth from one end to the other and the crib looks just as good and is just as solid as the day I put it together.

I love our ikea crib and hope they bring them back soon!

I had a national park passport, which I believe they still sell, when I was a kid and LOVED getting my stamp at each new park. the rangers were great and always made a big deal about it. they would give me the stamp and look through my book and ask me about the other parks I had been to.

it worked out well for me because we lived near a number of national parks and so my book was pretty impressive filled (you can get the stamps at historic parks as well as natural ones)

we took my 7 month old to connecticut for christmas (about a 10 hour with good traffic, which we didn't have). the key was timing. we left at about 3am and so she was asleep for the bulk of the trip.

I have also taken a couple of longish drives (3-4 hours) with just the two of us since then. again the key is timing. I leave right before nap time, hand her something to snack on and some milk and start driving. she usually falls asleep and when she is wakes up is just about the right time for a break for me.

also when it is just the two of us, I fill a box with toys and keep it on the passenger seat. when she is awake I pass her toys. when she loses interest in one toy she drops/throws the toy away and I toss her a new one.

I agree with the others, this is sad. there are tons of adorable shared rooms on ohdeedoh, please use one of them as inspiration and move two of your kids in together.

fall through spring I just leave my butter in the butter dish on the counter. it works out fine--we finish it off before it goes bad. during the summer I put just a couple of tablespoons out at a time in a ramekin on the counter.

it works perfectly.

I decided to start making granola recently, but was a little nervous about reading all of the comments on this site about how people had problems getting their homemade granola to cluster.

after reading the recipes and comments I actually went with one from williams-sonoma. it seemed simple and I had everything necessary lying around my kitchen. I substituted pecans for the almonds and left out the raisins. and I have to say--it is perfect! I spread the pan with parchment paper and have gotten perfect clusters every time I've made it.

I like the idea of books, but I urge you not to write in them and to include the gift receipt. a baby only needs so many copies of good night moon.

and I agree with the others, don't go for the "heirloom" stuff, it probably won't get used and there are plenty of other things that they could use.

have you considered nice toys for about 6 months old? something that the parents can put away for a few months until the child grows into it? a nice set of wooden blocks or a walker or something?
