FYI, Country Save is exactly the same detergent as Bum Genius {and Tiny Bubbles, for that matter}, but much less expensive. I buy it in bulk at our natural foods store :)

We cannot protect our children from every evil in the world. There aren't enough hours in the day!! ...and heck, there isn't enough money in my bank account either. We can, however, be reasonably vigilant and responsible. What ever happened to common sense??

...do I need a special (obnoxiously large) potato peeler in order to welcome my toddler into the kitchen? No. But am I going to leave him alone with our traditional peeler, or the block of knives?? No.

Wow--I don't usually comment on this stuff, but even I'm offended. As an adult who isn't able to eat gluten, dairy or soy... must I stay at home in a bubble as well?? Whatever happened to tolerance? :/

To the original poster... I think the best way to handle the allergy issues is to acknowledge any potential problems, kindly ask the parents, and then move on with the solution mom/dad will likely HAPPILY offer you. It's always nice to know you (or your child) are cared about and being considered.

My first idea was a 'finger food' buffet. Meat and cheese cubes, fruits, veggies, Pirates Booty or chips... simple is hard to beat :)

I know they're not pretty, but what about a $20 rug from somewhere like Wal*Mart or Home Depot? I bought a couple when we couldn't yet afford area rugs. They were 5x8 and larger, depending on the source, and basically just a carpet remnant with finished edges. It's be cushy and neutral... and easily vacuumed.

Bargaining in person has been the norm for me lately... both for my purchases AND items sold. Maybe it's a regional thing??

Also, I think whether or not you have good luck on CL somewhat has to do with where you live. Before we moved, I almost never found anything furniture-wise that I'd want... now, in our much 'older' city?? Wow! Goldmine!! I've had so much fun over the last couple of weeks outfitting our soon-to-be first home.

RE: bacon grease... we have a tiny little zip-loc portion cup from way back when I was a plasti-holic. We pour the grease in, then stash it in the freezer for a few hours. When it's frozen solid, a thwack! on the counter releases a little chunk of solid grease that we toss in the trash.
