I've been cable free for over a year. I went with a small desktop PC (Acer) with Windows Media Center (WMC). The one thing I couldnt give up was DVR thats why I went with a pc. With a TV tuner and remote the setup cost me about $400. I can still watch and record OTA stations(NBC,ABC,FOX,CBS) and suplement that with Netflix and Hulu that work from within WMC. Canceling cable saved me over $100 a month. Sure there are draw backs. I miss HBO and every once in a while I miss ESPN. But over all I love my cable free tv setup.

When I was younger, we used them for art projects. In kindergarten, they were used to hold paint for our latest projects and other crafts or to clean paint brushes. Try getting in touch with a local teacher or day care. I am sure they will be able to come up with a creative use. If you can't recycle, re-use

since when does having a TV in the bedroom make it double use? I don't have one in my bedroom but I would bet there are millions of others that do.

I love the rooms with the books though

I got one of those wind up flashlights and it has been a life saver when the power goes out. I love never having to worry about batteries and it works great. I also have plenty of candles through out the house for decor but I bought cheap ones so I wouldnt have to worry about using them in an emergency. Another thing I always do is keep my camping stove and a cooler handy, so I don't have to go digging in a closet or basement to find them if I need them.

I think you should incorperate it into your design of the bathroom. Buy some plumbing pipes and install shelving under it. You could destress the pipes used for the shelves to match the meter. It wont hide it but it will help it blend in. You could use the shelves for storage and maybe buy some interesting plumbing fixtures or joints to display on the shelves also.

It seems like the biggest problem is clutter/storage. I would recommend putting floor to ceiling shelving on the wall with the piano. Getting the books/cds/DVDs out of the way would help open the place up a lot. You can also pick up some storage cubes to place on the shelves as well to hold the random things that never seem to have a place.

As far as dealing with your roommate, I would recommend approaching your ideas one at a time. That way it will seem less overwhelming to him. It will also help discourage the idea that you are taking over the apartment if you implement one change at a time, rather than trying to redesign the whole place at once.
