Such a sad sad list. I'm thinking of the children, the defenseless innocence gone too soon children. They are born and live in all these places often loved by parents or surrogates trying their best. While I read apartment therapy for eye candy escapism I'm happy to be reminded of the real reality of amerikka in the 21st century.

Unfortunately money does not insure taste. Unfortunately I agree with the comments re coldness, lack of interior design, danger of glass stairs and that this was a rental ad. That said I'm glad I saw it. The tour confirms the can't quite put my finger on it vibe that has changed manhattan into a place that I don't enjoy as much as I used to. Oh well. I think the term is soul- less.

Gentrification first the hippies then the gays 2 male incomes, then high tech have rendered my hometown a very very difficult place to live. Not just expensive but difficult for those of us raised there in 50s and 60s. I left in 1972 and return often I don't know about any frightful places. The formerly "frightful" places -the Fillmore, the Mission and Hunters point are mostly gentrified beyond recognition. In the Castro the nude sidewalk dining is frightful and disgusting by my standards but beyond that gentrification rules.

I've also had much success bringing back art and artifacts from international and USA travel. It can be a hassle but the empty duffel bag approach works big time
