Oh I'm so glad to hear you say that - I hate duvets! But there is just nothing else out there - and I don't want to pay for something specially made every time I change.

Especially in hotels, and especially in summer - what's with duvets on the bed in July?

Long live blankets and bedspreads.

Me too! Things that are absolutely de rigeur make me mad, and the open kitchen thing is just a mess: a waste of a good wall and an excuse to make living spaces ever smaller.

One the happiest weddings I ever attended was in the morning with a reception afterward, finger food, everyone was happy and the entire day wasn't tied down for the majority of the guests who are just friends. The very close family went out to a wonderful dinner later that evening. It was festive, loving, inexpensive and mercifully short.

Agree totally- impossible to keep clean. Definitely not to be used where there is food prepared or served.

Home Goods has some terrific deals on really stylish pieces! But now I've moved and am not near one - next move that will be a criterion.

It will have to be taken to a dry cleaners because it will lose color and shape if you wash it, IF it's small enough to go into a professional washing machine. It may be a little cheaper to dry clean a cotton rug than a wool one, but in the long run, the wearability of the wool might trump that.

So buy what you like and what looks good in your price range.

And I would love nothing better than to buy a Persian rug, but the last one I bought for a decent sized dining room was close to $10,000, and the crisis of 2007 sort of made that impossible in the future... So a good looking rug for these prices looks both stylish and affordable. I don't plan to throw anything out any time soon...

Stainless is only low-maintenance if you don't mind rings and marks from every drop of water, vinegar, oil, whatever touches it. After a few years of marks, once it's really market up, it's OK, but those first few years are pretty ugly.

Marble shows water marks, too, and does require some work, but not quite as much as stainless.

Love open shelves in other people's kitchen, but can't imagine how one lives with them!

I know that floor space under a bedside table visually opens up the room, but I hate to waste the space and the drawers. Also, love the bookshelves but live in earthquake-prone California, so a no-go on that one, but it would be great somewhere else! The rooms with big windows behind the bed are really pleasant.

We used to do the same thing, but since we started installing stainless appliances we've kind of stopped.

Lauren, it's beautiful! My sister had exactly this apartment many years ago, and she's never forgiven herself for moving out! Don't move without some serious thought!

Love that blue - I used it in a mountain chalet with lots of slate rock and it was fabulous - here it's beautiful in the opposite way with white. Wonderful.

Lots of light too - just lovely.
