There is nothing in these pictures that even remotely suggest "farmhouse," and trying to make the space compatible with "farmhouse" just isn't going to work. But that doesn't mean I don't like the furniture you have. Going with the color block rug and picking colors from it would be a good start. If you're not certain about art and accessories, take baby steps, buy from flea markets, print out art from your computer, have it enlarged or tape pieces together and use masking tape to put them up on your wall to see if your like the general style before you buy anything, then buy what you can afford. After you've determined your style in the main spaces, then rethink the kitchen in that style.

I didn't vote for this entry during the contest, but now that I see the house tour I'm more of a fan, but I thought it needed a bit of editing of "stuff" to best show off the space and I still think so. I remember Maxwell writing about his neighbor telling him he didn't need to fill every nook and crannie in his small apartment and he took many things out to make it work and feel better.

I prefer the visual impact of a large rectangle over the grouping of several (or many) small pieces...groupings fill up the space, but detract from the art itself. I think these photos were chosen for the shapes, rather than the color or content.

I would never want Maxwell to drop his role in the cure..his introductions and pictures of his own projects are really the heart and soul of AT. I remember one time when he was less involved on the site for a short time and someone commented "Who is Maxwell?"

I am sorry that your apartment didn't make it to the grand prize. I have been voting in the contest since the second year and I think yours is one of the very top entries of all time. I actually shed a few tears when I saw the results. This year it looks like the folks are voting for "how much brightly colored stuff can we accumulate in a small space?" I do hope that Maxwell features you in his next book!

Can the washed linen sheets Maxwell recommends go in the dryer? My apartment laundry doesn't have a no heat option and I don't have room in my apartment to line dry sets of sheets.

Matthew's space, while inviting, doesn't show enough work "stuff" in the picture to indicate it's more than a place to surf the Internet. Tonya's shows a bit more, but only Tim's workspace actually looks like a workspace..going with Tim!

Keep the chairs, sell the loveseat. Put up the records, see what colors you pick up there and go with them for the accents. No throw pillows on the furniture and no potted plants unless it/they are at least six feet tall. All of the accessories/artwork should be things you love, not things you bought just to decorate. If you bring enough color in, the rug should work. If not, bring more color in with a different rug.

I have nothing against tours of small homes, but it seems that we have recently been seeing mostly house tours and fewer and fewer apartment tours.

What the first remark refers to is that the entire plant is poisonous. It can be fatal to pets/children/adults. Not worth taking the risk to have it around.

I love seasonal changes and have a spring/summer and a fall/winter change of accessories/artwork/rugs/bedding.
For the holidays I have seasonal artwork, a shower curtain with slogans such as HoHoHo and Season's Greetings, holiday dishes and glassware, and a collection of snowmen placed around my apartment. I also have a collection of Christmans and New Years postcards which get clipped to "lines" strung around. I put my tree on the deck and decorate for the birds with strings of popcorn and cranberries. All the lights indoors and out are white and I don't use any holiday scents except cedar. Because everything except the postcards are not
specifically Christmas designs, I usually leave them all up until the end of January.

Aside from the fact that I really admire everything you've done with this space, your house tour was exceptionally well photographed. Well lit and viewed from many angles, you can get a real sense of the space and the layout. Anyone thinking of entering any of the AT contests would do well to study this tour!

I'm mostly with Lisa(Montreal) on this one up to a point.
No small pillows or solid color throws. The seat cover, throw and large pillow need to be in synch with the rest of your decorating style, but two out of three need to be large patterns, or you'll just wind up with blocks of color.
A tray on the ottoman is also a great idea. I don't use one on my leather ottoman all the time, but when I have company and want it to function more as a coffee table, I add the tray.

I think you'll always be ok if the style on your balcony or patio is a match to your style inside. In the summer, I move some of my balcony plants/decor just inside the sliding glass door and in the winter I move some of the inside decor out onto the balcony. It expands the look of the space to include whatever is outside. And I'm talking the frozen Midwest, not the more temperate zones.

Just a thought...if you are planning on keeping any of the above mentioned to sell in the future or hope they turn into "valuable collectables" for your great grandchildren, you will need to have them in the original packaging. Remember those scenes on Antiques Roadshow where the appraiser shakes his or her head and says "if only you had the original packaging."
