Before & After: French Ruin (Bought for 1 Euro!) Turned Cozy Cave Home Vocativ

If you put tulips in that much water they won't last. They will drink too much water and it will ruin them. They need only a few centimeters of water and another trick is to pierce the stem with a needle before puting them in there. You need to cut them down every few days because they keep growing.

I love shoes and books and sometimes I put a pair I just bought on display on a book shelf. I always find myself a little silly being so happy about a new pair of pretty shoes, but why not. Once they have been on the street though they get stored on shelves in a closet. I can't imagine sleeping with street dirt above my head.

Sure you should be - as some have said here - grateful for having a home. But that will not suffice to make you feel good about your home.
Even more than a year after my husband passed away I didn't feel good in my home anymore. I thought of moving but real estate prices are so high in Paris where I live that it was virtually impossible, plus I still loved my neibourhood. I ended up moving things around, replacing sofa, coffee table, dinner table and an armchair with new ones in white and buying plants. In a way I moved apartments inside my apartment. It was worth the expense. I know again the so important pleasure of coming home to my place.

Surprised by all these articles on the pitfalls of rentals and even more about this one on white walls. I rented for many years in Paris before buying. White walls and wooden floors never seemed a problem to me.

Get one! After moving into a place with too small a kitchen for a normal size dishwasher I was so happy to discover that they came in all sorts of sizes.

I live in Paris and I have a bunch of places I like but my all time favorite is La Closerie des Lilas. It is a piano bar, restaurant and brasserie. Forget about the restaurant which is too expensive and boring, the brasserie which has the same kitchen but a reduced menu is the place to be. You cannot reserve but since it is so nice to have a cocktail in the connecting bar while waiting for a table, who cares. And like everywhere else once they know you your table will be ready much sooner. In the summer there is a nice terrace and late at night some famous singer might take over the piano for an impromptu.

The door of my parisian apartment opens into my living room. It is reinforced with metal and has a safety lock and metal bars, so safe but not in the least attractive. I have a curtain in front of it that hangs on a rod above it that is set on a hinge so it moves with the door when you open it. That mechanism has existed forever in France. Not only does it hide my door but since the curtain is lined with felt it also protects me from the noise in the staircase and gives me more privacy.

Mold was my worst experience. I was pregnant with my second when we rented a beautiful villa that had been freshly painted. There was no way we could have suspected any problem. It took only a few month for mold to appear in our closets and in the pantry. Obviously the landlord had hidden the mold behind paint. The house was very humid and using systems to absorb the humidity didn't help enough. Moving out was the only solution.

I don't quite agree with the recommendation to get rid of things you haven't worn for a year. Since I prefer quality over quantity I sometimes get tired of a piece that is still in perfect condition. Instead of getting rid of it though I store it in a suitcase. After not wearing it for a year or two or even three I'm often very happy to wear it again. That's even more true for accessories. Before buying a new bag I go through my personal vintage collection. This spring a number of friends loved my "new" red bag and were surprised to discover it's missing a pocket for a cellphone.

This is very nice but how many pictures (13) with the same sofa do you need? And once again there are so many vignettes and not enough pictures that allow you to understand the layout of this apartment.

Traveling with children brings wonderful memories. The first evening in a hotel after an overseas flight we would order room service. Having dinner in pj's was a ritual we all enjoyed. My sons are adults now and since they are living in different cities we take at least a trip a year together and love it.

I'm all in favor of trying to save money but this seems a bit radical. While shopping less and cooking most of your meals seems a good idea, going to bed to avoid spending money on energy seems too extreme to me. Going out with friends or inviting them over brings you great memories. Bon courage!

Well it probably depends on how long you intend to stay in a rental and what the rules are in the country your renting. As an expat you have to adapt and you don't necessarily feel like completely redoing a place if you're staying short term. Putting a bigger painting on top of mantel or chest leaning against a wall can do the trick too. Happily I don't have to deal with that issue anymore.

I very much dislike the new presentation. One thing I particularly like about AT is that there are constantly new posts and that I could tell with one click if there was something new. Now you leave "your" favorite post for a while on top. That's annoying to me.

I grew up in Austria and in the sixties and early seventies my mum had a subscription to a wonderful German magazine called Architektur und kultiviertes wohnen, it featured homes from all over the world. My mum didn't have the money to have a home like those shown but it inspired her and definitely influenced me.
