It's a great idea, but do you have to be able to reach the closet bar to pull it down (in which case you're probably already tall enough to get by without it), or is there a handle? What Helpful Secret is this Closet Hiding? Martha Stewart |

We have a similar problem to people with a split entry: it's not on a different level, but it is a TINY, but defined space off of the living room, and no graceful way to expand it into the living room. When I'm coming in with my kids, it's a huge log jam because only one person can get in and get their boots off at a time. Tips for Dealing with a No-Entryway Entryway Renters Solutions |

Minneapolis and St. Paul! Arts and culture reminiscent of much larger cities, cost of living in line with mid-size American cities, and lots of protected urban nature. There's a strong urban homesteading movement. If you're willing to endure long, cold winters (while being introduced to zillions of winter sports you've never even heard of), it's a great place to live. I love it! Are those halogen lights? I'm surprised people are so down on white cabinets. I'm not sure any style is completely timeless, but this seems pretty classic to me--certainly more so than the zebra-striped wood grain cabinets we see here so often, and the oak cabinets of the 80's didn't exactly fare well in the long run either. If you like white, I think they're a great choice! If you don't like white, maybe just don't use them in your own house and leave it at that. Before & After: Light & Bright Updated Kitchen |

Here's one I did just yesterday but don't do often enough: dust your houseplants. It's amazing how much more fresh and alive they feel when the leaves are nice and shiny rather than coated in dust. But I'd love to know if there are more efficient ways of doing this than painstakingly wiping down each leaf with a wet rag. 10 Simple Things To Make Any Home Happier & Healthier |

If possible, find a realtor who has contractor experience, because they'll be able to pre-inspect a home (for free) before you make an offer. Then hire a "real" inspector that comes from a trusted source, preferably NOT your realtor, since a strong relationship between the two can present a conflict of interest. Someone in our group of friends started the "no gifts" practice for kids' birthday parties, and it quickly spread. I'm so grateful! They still get gifts from family, but we've cut out our major source of crappy junk from Target. I recommend it! The 7-Day Toy Cure A Busy Parent's Plan for Editing Down Your Home's Toys |

FANTASTIC! Really inspiring. To whomever said it reminds them of a daycare, I say that would be a pretty effing sophisticated daycare. And I would send my kids there. Alex Fulton's Flirtatious Use of Crazy Color House Tour |

I think there are a lot of regional customs, so all of these tips might not be universal. In Minnesota where I live, people aren't big hagglers, so if you price everything double they will just walk away and think you're a jerk for overpricing things. We have a gravel pit too, which our kids love. We also rigged up a 3-foot length of gutter that starts outside the gravel pit and ends just inside the edge, where gravel scooped into the outside end can slide down to fill a dump truck. I'm intrigued by the idea of planting them, but my recipes usually call for the "white and light green parts" of scallions. I sometimes also throw in the nice looking upper green parts, but I always assumed the flavor was inferior. Perhaps I need to be educated about this? What do you use the tops for? Thank you! I'm totally with LaurenBick. I need an education in these styles--if for no other reason than to broaden my Craigslist search terms. I always end up searching "mid century" even though I don't really want a mid century overrun home. Art Deco hits a little closer to my style, but I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing in my ignorance. It reminds me of something I've seen in Latin America called "crema"--something between whipping cream and sour cream in both flavor and texture, and there were certainly processed versions of it with fillers. This looks like the same idea adapted for the North American processed food market. What the Heck is Philadelphia "Cooking Creme"? |
