We lived in one apartment that was dead quiet for an entire year - backed to an alley, solid pre-war construction. Then we got new upstairs neighbors - a family of four in a one bedroom and a mom with a huge leg brace thing. It sounded like they were bowling all day! While it's already been said, unquestionably vertical storage and built ins. Shelves are pretty easy to put in and increase functionality by a lot. Well timed posting for me, I have been looking for free programs to use since I'm no longer a student and a switch from PC to Mac left me without rendering software. The range is on longer to heat the water for the french press than the coffee machine is plugged in for, not sure which is worse environmentally. Also, our coffee machine has a permanent filter, so each take about the same amount of time to clean. Coffee is equally delicious from each! Between my husband and I, we get about 12 subscriptions. So no, we don't keep them all. We bought our mid-century modern house a year ago, so I've been keeping all copies of Atomic Ranch and some Dwell. I also keep some Food & Wine. I graduated with a degree in landscape architecture, so I keep all those very organized, to stay current in what's going on. While sometimes it's hard to recycle them, I rarely go back to most of what we subscribe to. Survey: Do You Keep Magazines? | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

I think it's "more responsible" but not really green. The size and location (it looks private and not in a walkable/bike friendly area) prohibit it from being the most responsible choice. Also, new construction isn't going to be as sustainable ever as purchasing an existing house and making it green. It is beautiful though! Big House ... I second the getting rid of the blinds. Replacing them with color appropriate draperies will make a world of difference. And, not to offend, cleaning up the space will make it feel brighter. I LOVE looking in people's carts. I mostly shop at Whole Foods and the cashiers are always commenting on items in people's carts too. You can get great product recommendations from it.
