My barely 2-year old sorts our silverware while I unload the rest of the dishwasher. He LOVES it. Just make sure to take out the steak knives first.

Five Time-Saving Tips For Busy Parents

I just hosted my friend's baby shower and one of the "games" was to guess what the sex would be (the parents were waiting until the birth to find out) and to suggest a name. Throwing a whole party around your fetus'
gender....yeah, over the top. So now we've seen first birthdays, baby showers, "gender parties" and big old productions to tell your family you are expecting. What's next, "we're trying to conceive" soirees?

@vdp, if you are looking for a gender neutral tea set, we bought a wooden one from Plan Toys. My son loves it and is always making us cups of tea.

That playroom is so cool. I would have loved something like that as a kid.

I use baskets and then group like with like. One basket for pjs, one for pants, one for shirts, one for socks and hats, etc. You can use any container you've got lying around.

If after all this she still buys you the dishwasher, sell it on craigslist and put the money toward something you really need. And when she asks where the dishwasher is, tell her the truth, kindly. It was very generous of you mom, but we needed X more, so we sold it and put the funds toward X.

My mother gave us each a cardboard memory box, about the size of two file boxes. We could save whatever we wanted in that box. As I grew up and it started getting full, I would sort through it and toss what I didn't want any more. It was nice to have ownership of my own things.

I've used the Fisher Price Booster on the floor and it was very stable. In the spring/summer, I would take my son out on the front porch and sit on the steps next to him watching the world go by while we had our meal. Some of my best memories!

I second the Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster! We've been using it since my son was 7 months. He's now two years old and it's still going strong. You can submerge the whole thing in the sink to clean or even stick it in your dishwasher if the dishwasher is big enough (ours is).

My two additions to the list:

Kladd Prickar Bib set from Ikea. Bibs with sleeves that you can rinse off in the sink. BEST BIBS EVER. Kushies also makes bibs with sleeves, but they are three times the price.

Sumner Infant Tiny Diner. If they like to eat out, this is awesome, otherwise their kid will be eating straight off the table that was just wiped down with a dirty dish rag.

And, as others have said, California Baby bath products are great. Get the sunscreen too!

We have a door flip lock installed near the top of our door. It cost around 3 bucks, was easy to install and is unobtrusive. Ours is white and it matches the door, but I can't remember where we bought it. Here is an example of a door flip lock:

I have some suction bowls I haven't used yet. When I was feeding my son, I would just hold a ceramic bowl in my hand. He is 10 months now and will only do finger foods. I just put the food straight on his high chair tray. Sometimes he will practice using a spoon and try to eat out of my bowl, but that's it. When do they actually start using a spoon, fork and bowl?

I have never heard of having children eat meals at a different table except on holidays when there is just not a lot of room and all the cousins eat together. I find the whole concept odd.
