We drive 4 hours from Green Bay to Chicago to go to IKEA about once a year. We haven't had any fights since I have every last step preplanned on an Excel spreadsheet with quantity, cost, sales tax, and sorted by department. But we do get the shopping fatigue as mentioned above. Start off with a good breakfast for 99 cents, don't go on the weekend, and don't hurry in the warehouse, as much as you want to get out of there after 4 hours. We rushed through the warehouse 2 weeks ago and I'm still trying to get the white bedrails that go with the MALM twin we bought....not the mismarked dark brown bedrails we came home with. UGH. i agree with mmilham. we have had a malm bedroom set for 5 years and are very happy with it. we've also have billy bookcases and have outfitted our bar and bathroom with their cabinets. we have a huge benno wall unit too. i've been very happy with it. you get what you pay for....if you want something super sturdy and solid wood, it's not going to be $60! duh, IKEA-Land! We gave up on the idea of having an attached 2-stall garage, and ended up with a single-stall detached which is only a big deal when it's raining, snowing, or below zero and you have to take out the garbage. We also ended up with a 1 1/2 story, of which the 2nd floor is a converted attic that is now a long skinny bedroom with a non-functional chimney through it. Wish I had about 2' more in celing height up there or at least some dormers. What 'Must-Haves' Did You Let Go Of When Buying Your First Home? |

Bumbo (borrowed one, she used it for 1 month), exersaucer (bought one on craigslist, she used it for 2 months). I have a small house and actually DO use my baby monitor a lot - every time we go down in the basement for extended periods of time, or outside so i can do yardwork or sit around the fire pitl. Oh, and chives freeze fine. I cut fresh chives in the fall and eat them out of the freezer all winter - they're great! The Do-Not-Freeze-These-Foods List Freezer Friendly |

i've had good luck with premaking pasta bakes and freezing them, with both pasta and mozz cheese on them, as well as freezing red peppers for soups or stirfrys later. I had bad luck with a homemade cream of potato soup (when it was defrosted it was gluey) and ham or anything smoked. The smoked flavor gets really tangy after a few months in the freezer. Yuck. does anyone have any good alternatives for window coverings in the kitchen? i noticed there was not one anymore. i have had roman shades from ikea (not washable...now junk) and stainless steel blinds from ikea as well (look great, but hard to clean because they get bent). looking for a low cost high style alternative. loved watching the new york flower market....great clip Maxwell. i alternate between a new house plant (then i bring them to work when i'm bored with them), a bowl of gourds and pumpkins right now, and then i'll do something with evergreen swags for Christmas time. not sure what to do in January...maybe that will be the best time for flowers to help us think about spring! easy tip for the shower curtain. yes it is good to leave it ungathered so it doesn't get gross. but if it does get gross, and it's vinyl/rubber, did you know you can just throw it in the washer on cold? i've been using the same $4 vinyl liner for about 5 years. when it gets coated in soap scum, i just take it down, wash it, and put it back up, wet even. although the idea of getting flowers from the country is fun, be wary of poisonous berries and flowers, for pets and toddlers. the red berries looked suspiciously like viburnum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viburnum) which I had in my yard as a kid, and was always told they were poisonous. also, I'm not sure about NY, but in the midwest, there are laws against picking protected wildflowers, like the trillium in some states(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trillium) but not all. i'm a fan of the method products (kind of green?), especially their all purpose spray and floor cleaner. i invested in the O mop with wood & tile mops that can be washed in the washing machine, and some microfiber cloths for cleaning glass & mirrors. and i just use Comet on my old sinks and Bon Ami on my new one (Bon Ami just doesn't get the stains out the old sinks). enchiladaplate - i have also used freecycle in the past and loved it. what to do with 2 years of house beautfiul from the 90's, that you never flip through anymore? post it on freecycle and someone comes and picks it up....someone who was redecorating her cottage and looking for inspiration. perfect. i try to go once a year, but it's about a four hour drive for us to Chicago or Minneapolis. this also means usually a hotel stay, so add another $125 to the trip. The IKEA Habit: Need Vs. Want |

i love it! As a dedicated IKEA shopper myself (from Green Bay, so we make the hike to Chicago or MN) I see a lot of IKEA stuff, but it's good that you're also mixing in some of your own personal items. You may want to add more personal items so it doesn't look like a catalog page. But i absolutely love it, and the architecture of your home is fabulous also!
