I agree with the sand/stain/seal with poly idea. You don't want to go through all the trouble of restoring this piece just to have it smell like cat urine on humid days.

I agree with most everyone else; update the landscaping, change that front door to something more fitting, and try a different window treatment besides those too skinny shutters.

Also I would personally go a with a different paint color vs. the white at the gable ends. It looks like too stark a contrast from the natural stone facade of the rest of the home. Something more earthy maybe, with a pop of color at the door?

I also like the idea bexblack32 had about making the columns smooth faced, and I say match their color to that of the gable ends. And maybe do wood planks or a smooth wood slab on top of the low wall to add a little more visual interest and detail.
