Having lived in a place where I had the choice of sitting on the toilet sideways or hanging my legs into the tub I know how important this is.
Another trick is to see how easy it is to get in and out of the bathroom. I bought a place before it was finished and they hadn't installed the doors yet. The door frame is on an angle wall and once the door was installed I discovered it is very difficult to get in and out of the bathroom because when opened the door uses up almost all of the floor space. However, it is quite humorous to witness tipsy friend struggle to get out.

I would also suggest taking detailed pictures before you do anything. Very helpful when trying to get your deposit back.

I have always been very lucky and have been able to paint. Once my apartment manager actually painted for me. He told me that he was going to paint the apartment and was tired of white so he said I could chose any color I wanted.

I wonder if people that paint their apartments (with permission) are likely to stay there longer since it feels more like home. There is something to say about the feeling of ownership in your home even if you are renting.

I spilled a gallon of Pepto-Bismol pink primer on the carpet as I was moving out of my apartment. After a lot of water and swearing and the help of a steam cleaner I was able to get most of it out but the carpet always had a pink tinge to it.

I forgot how they always served tacos with watery corn! The soggy shell and the faux cheese that never quite melted.

The rectangle pizza with sausage was always a favorite of mine and to this day I still love pizza with a glass of milk. I was also a big fan of the grilled cheese. My mother insisted on making hers with cheddar and wheat bread so the wonder bread and velveeta was a special treat.

No creepy stories but I did go though the old population records that are available at the Denver library. Turns out the first person to live in my apartment back in 1928 and I have the same first name. I always found that comforting.

Also, when speaking with a moving company, I discovered the rep lived in the same 10 unit apartment building back in 1969. Knowing that place, it was probably the same carpet...

Careful purchasing from Macy’s. I purchased a purchased on sale $900 instead of $2200 (I would never pay full price there because they seem to mark up for sales) and hated it. When I looked into returning it within the 30 days I discovered there was a restocking fee (15 or 20%) and there weren’t having another sale within that time frame so if I wanted to get an equal value mattress I would have to pay full price. It would actually be cheaper to just wait for another sale and trash my new mattress than purchase at full price minus the credit with the restocking fee. So if you do buy one, make sure they plan to have another sale within 30 days.

Another issue that really upset me was that I opened a Macy’s card when I purchased it for the 10% discount and no interest for 12 months. Though I specifically requested that I only apply for the Macy’s store card they went ahead and opened a Macy’s Visa as well. When I started to look into refinancing my mortgage I noticed my credit rating went down because I opened 4 credit accounts last year – all were from Macy’s. 1 being the Visa, 1 the basic revolving store charge, 1 the 12 month no interest account and finally another account sitting there in case I don’t pay off the no interest account within the 12 months. In order to save a couple hundred dollars (if that) it will likely cost me thousands because I am now 8 point shy of getting the best possible interest rate.

Sorry for the rant, but I just discovered the credit report issue today and am really upset about it.

I was short about $1 on my meal card in the cafe at work. The person behind me covered it and when I asked where his office was so I could repay him he said, "don't worry, just cover someone when they are short." Sure enough a couple of months later I was able to do the same for someone else. Even though it was only $1, I felt great both days.

I would be so tempted to do that same and think it is a great idea for weddings.

If you do want to sell them or if you are in the market to buy items like this, check out http://www.bravobride.com It is a site where you can buy used items for weddings or large event and/or sell the items afterwards.

Here is an example of an easy, no sew kit. I made one with some spare fabric. It took about an hour and turned out great.

A friend taught me an easy way to remember which bread plate and glass is yours. Simply make an "okay" sign with your hand. The left hand looks like a "b" for bread plate and the right hand looks like a "d" for drink. Silly but handy at a crowded dinner table when the "is this my bread plate?" discussion starts.

Also, if you decide to give (or received) a Visa gift card, use it right away. I received a Visa gift card and put it aside to use on a rainy day. When I tried to use the non-expired card, it didn't work and then when I finally got around to calling the company (only open 9-5, M-F) they informed me that not only had they frozen it due to inactivity, they were also charging a monthly fee. My $100 gift certificate was now only worth $55. I spent HOURS fighting the charges over the next week and they finally credited me for those fees but I will certainly think twice before ever giving those out.

Great in the summer. Great for staying in bed all day. Not the best for work. Having had a fabulous view before, I learned that sadly sometimes it is better not see how dreary it is all day. The romance is fleeting. I guess it is time for a little SAD light therapy - though today was lovely.

I had the same situation except it was the apartment manager smoking below me. I casually mentioned it to him and he was very apologetic since he didn’t realized that it was flowing into my apartment. He ended up turning on his fan when he smoked - blowing it away from the building and the direction of my window which helped a lot.

If they are blowing the smoke out the window, they don’t want their place to smell like smoke either so hopefully they will be understanding.

Sadly if the weather we have been having in Seattle stays the same, you won’t have to open your window for about 10 months.

I used to have wonderful neighbors that lived in the garden level apartment. When I would return home from work they would sitting outside and always ask me to join them for wine. There were many nights that is was well past 10:00 by the time I actually made it upstairs to my place.

I moved and still have some great neighbors, but it isn't the same.

My bedroom window was right by my neighbor's front door. More than once (many time more) I heard her at the door drunkenly saying to the latest gentleman next to her , "Ohmygod - I never do this..." It was hard to yell "yes she does!"
