I work from home as a designer and illustrator and author...until my son was in kindergarten I had day care three days a week, and when he was a baby I had a great nanny three times a week.. On days my son was with me during the week I was fully with him and would work during nap time , time when he played by himself , and as soon as my husband was back home until late at night. Now I work at night and in the morning , and the only reason I survive is because I work mostly with the east coast and Europe , they can't communicate in the afternoons.

I had some odd moments. Skype is the best and worst of tools : one time my son , fed up to wait for me after a 15mn conference, began to throw his stuffed animals at the computer . And another time he stole a full box of brownie bites in the kitchen and began to stuff himself just behind me. I am glad I work with people with a sense of humor. I don't usually work much when my son is alone with me.

Working from home on my own projects , I do have to work as much if not more than when I wasn't telecommuting. But I do get to run to school if there is a problem, I can settle a sickie camp in my studio, and instead of a lunch break I do get to ride my bike for errands instead, which I really like to do. Sometimes I work late because I took some well deserved me time, and I appreciate to shop when nobody is around, and to work when everybody sleeps.

Working from home is like having the possibility to have your children at work: not for the faint at heart.

PS: I do dress correctly even if I seat between the bedroom and the kitchen . It helps me feeling that I am in fact at work and not at home.

When it came to share my studio with my son, I discovered very quickly that toddlers and swivel chairs are not a good match. The wheels are dangerous for small feets and fingers and the chair itself is not a safe toy, albeit a very tempting one. I bought a very comfortable chair instead. My chair and table match the tiny ones I found for my son which is fun and helps him feel that his own space is to be taken seriously. I also added a high chair on my own desk. It's a bit tight but my son loves to come and play by my side while I work. The rule is that it's my desk and he is not allowed to make a mess. He goes from one desk to another, plays quietly on the carpet and I manage to work a few hours a day while he is with me.
Don't be afraid to match your own style with your daughter's space, you will both appreciate it. And I am sure she will bring color enough with her toys and drawings! Frame her some picture just like you have yours, maybe a board for her art...to me a shared office should be first of all your room , it will help you both to follow the new rules you will have to set for a more quiet moment.

I think you need to have your very own place in the house to hang stuff you like. Childrenshould be able te create their own space, too. I made a big painting of bunnies flying in the sky with balloons but my son liked decals with happy sheep and parachutes better. So here we go, happy sheep. The bunnies ended on my wall in my workshop were they are put to work as reference for my next book. And I think it's ok.

As a color expert I would say : paint it pink, yes, if she asked for it....but add coral-red and turquoise accents. And maybe a bit of golden yellow. You will be surprised how non-pink the result will be, because it's out of the pink symbol scheme.

I once saw my favorite Sasha doll, in a museum, and it freaked me out. I carried mine in my suitcase from France along with very little personal belongings. her clothes were in a pretty bad state for so much playing so I splurged in new, original ones for her...my brother saw that, recognized the clothes and freaked out because they looked new-hum, they were. Ok, out of creepy stories : Poupée Caroline is seated in my bookshelf in a tiny vintage doll chair and she looks perfectly at ease between my collection of Japanese craft books and vintage drawing books. She reminds me tons of good memories and makes me feel at home, thousand of miles from home...

My husband still has the scar from the frame that broke and fell in his crib when he was a baby. My mother in law wanted me to sympathize on her lack of luck, I just felt like she wasn't very clever ... For us it was all fabric bundles and mobiles and decals, and now that the boy insist on posters, they are unframed and attached with tac and command sturdy, non dangerous adhesive. And I check them regularly. My husband could have been killed by the broken glass. I am so glad he wasn't , and taking no risks.

Be logical, act on the causes of tumb sucking. Children need to be reassured. Thumb sucking is for self soothing. By engaging in an aggressive comportment you might get results but it only will make matters worse for the poor child. Try more hugs, give them more quality time, allow them to carry around a blankly or a teddy bear, be more kind! I was a terrible thumb sucker and swore to myself to act on it for my children. I try to be very nice with my son, no yelling, lots of hugs, few rules but strictly followed to give him a safe, well known environment. No thumb sucking. He is the only one in my family!

There is just enough color to warm up the place and the contrast make it very nice in a baby's point of view too! I love the carpet, I want the same!

I removed the pad when my son was 6 months, and put it back, omg, my son stuck his arm and had bruises on his head! I choose a breathable one. My son made clear very soon that he hated his crib, a nice designer crib, but anyway. No bumpers, no quilts, no soft toys, no nothing, our children begin their lives in a prison! It's time to think about it.

Much ado about nothing.

All the telephones have drops. We expect the iPhone to be perfect and it's not possible, nothing can be absolutely perfect. Anyway: It works a hundred times better than any other phone, anyway.

We were stuck in SF the other day, trying to find our way through 511.org. Four telephones. My Blackberry and my friend's litteraly frose one after another after 15 minutes of bad customer experience. We were lucky one of us had an iphone. It took her 2 minutes to get the information we never got in 15.

It's easy to go after a super popular product and criticize it, but I think the apple team made a pretty good job at designing the iPhone. The only reason I don't own one is because the AT&T coverage is not good where I live...I might make the jump anyway.

I love my clutter! (But it's cute clutter)
No woman is a desert. I'm more of the island kind. Pretty, cluttered island with a lot of color.

I actually rescpected all your rules , like thta I have more room for toys, art stuff and knickknacks.

Except for going wireless. Anyone with a toddler knows how nice it is to have the keyboard and mouse attached to the computer.

I have a very simple philosophy: I keep stuff as long as they work. So I still have my old iPod from 2005, and a brand new ipad.

I'm perfectly happy just like that, not wondering if newer will be better, just wondering if the tech I own provides what I need.

I downoald all the novels I read, and most magazines.

The only book I still buy are my craft books with patterns, and art books.

I'm an avid reader (3 to seven books a week), and having a whole library in my iPad is a true delight!

My husband and I always agreed on private work spaces. This said, I share mine with my 3 years old boy, with strict rules about what's off limits. I guess he will need his own desk space when he will get older. For the moment we get along very well.

Paper work is limited to a small corner where we also charge portable media items. Like that it's off territory for both of us, so we don't argue about it.

I think that everybody has a right to a private space in the house. Having a place where you can be comfortable with yourself helps building self confidence and makes better family relationship.

Our favorite app on the ipadis actually an iphone one, but it scales OK:

Feed me!
You have to feed a monster with the results of the questions he asks.

I was surprised to watch my 3 years old going enthusiastically through all the questions, learning his letters and numbers without paying attention. Lovely!
