Fun! I've always wanted to do this. It'll have to wait until I'm no longer renting, though. :)

Good lord. I was an RA, and we just got a regular room, sometimes even with a roommate. This place, on the other hand, has a fireplace. I'm going to go sulk now.

This trend of decorating with books really, really bothers me. Books have their own important purpose, and it seems incredibly disrespectful to ignore what they actually are - reading material - in favor of what you'd prefer to get out of them - in this case, a pretty piece of decor. Many of the books in these photos look to be in good condition, and I spotted several that certainly can't be deemed to "look better than they read" - the copy of All the King's Men in the first photo, for instance.

Nothing sums up this artist's indifference toward books better than his own quote: "No books that could change the course of world events are harmed in the production."

It's the words that count, you shallow man, not the cover.

Lovely! I'm in the middle of setting up my own library - nixed the guest bedroom in favor of it; I have no apologies - and these are great inspirations. There's nothing more endearing than walking into someone's house and seeing loved and well-used books and bookshelves.

I don't like the first spot - it's a bit tight for me - but I love the others. They look so comfy and cozy - perfect for an afternoon of reading that trails off into an unexpected nap. Mmm.

Clever, but doesn't having books all around you turn any room into your own personal reading space/library, despite it not being exclusively devoted to books? I'm not sure I'd want my books practically on top of me like that. Seems like it'd just be creating an even smaller space inside an already small area, when you should be maximizing what you've got.

Shoot - I've lived in KC off and on for 11 years and never been there. It looks so fun. And I'm moving out of state in literally two days...how typical!

When I saw the thumbnail of Schouten's alternative Christmas tree, I honestly thought it was the Star Trek symbol all prettied up. I was so glad to see on further inspection that it was not. :)

How beautiful. Don't you just love all that green? They make ordinary aquariums look positively dreary by comparison.

One of the most horrific things I've ever seen done, book-wise, was in a newly built custom home. The homeowners had spent nearly a million dollars creating this dream house - they picked out marble from Naxos, spent thousands on decorative gargoyles, the lot. In their built-in bookcases, however, they put FAKE BOOKS. You know, the painted wood panels that look like old books. It wasn't even as though there was a hidden door behind them (the only acceptable reason I could think for installing them), it was purely decorative.

Gets my blood boiling to this day.

Last Thanksgiving it was just me and my husband (fiancé at the time) and one of his roommates. Instead of cooking a big turkey, we had individual Cornish game hens. We still had a few of the regular sides - stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes - just on a smaller scale. It was a lovely, intimate meal with a lot less fuss.

Call me a cranky poster if you must, but this just seems like a lot of work for something that's incredibly fragile, must be kept absolutely dry, doesn't block light and wastes food.
