One other item. We cloth diaper. I wish I had skipped the pocket diapers. Prefolds and thirsties wraps are awesome and can take take a lot of abuse. Not one leak. Ever. Our fuzzibunz have to be handled very carefully and just makes laundry complicated. Avoiding the Avalanche of Baby "Must Haves" |

Awesome way to create storage space! Even if one didn't want to cover the head board and foot board, the curtain would look great running the entire length behind the bed. Dressing Up A Metal Frame Bed, Part 2 Apartment Therapy Reader DIY | Apartment Therapy DC |

Be careful with a pattern - the masonry is already a pattern. Whatever solid color you may choose will change the way you see the brick. Go with a blue and it will bring out the blue in the masonry. Go with orange and it will brighten the masonry. My suggestion.... warm grey in a medium or medium-dark value. Maybe the same "value" as the brick. It will give you a neutral palette for your white furniture to pop against. White on grey is always a sleek modern look. Remember your brick is texture, not necessarily color. Color, Color, Color! I would paint the cabinets either a dark gray if you want neutral, or an glossy eye grabbing 'apple green' or whatever your fancy. Pair that with sleek hardware and you a function beauty. Right now, it's a pretty nice built in but lacks personality. Ideas for Cabinet Makeover & New Countertop? We have a similar sectional and small living room. As it turns out we really loved it when we turned the "chaise end" out into the living room.... as in not in the corner. The chaise is meant to be used from three sides so try situating your sofa so that it sticks out and defines your space a bit. Layout Ideas for Low Back Sectional Sofa? Your windows are strong vertical focal points. Ground the composition with a long, low shelf for plants and books and stuff. Now that you have the 'high' and 'low' of it so to speak, place something 'mid' height in front of the low shelf to define the space where one can safely go without bumping his head. Perhaps a chair and tall side table and a floor lamp with personality to make a statement. Decorating Around Dormers in Our Attic Bedroom? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Boston |

I've been thinking about replacing the dated, discolored vinyl in my bathroom for a long time. The trouble is that all I can afford is more vinyl - and I don't like vinyl. This approach has a lot more style. My questions are: How To Repaint & Stencil Ugly Rental Vinyl Tile Flooring Home Hacks | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

I think the key to all of these suggestions - most of them anyway - is that a dark color would work well. Maybe a grey a couple of steps darker than your tile counter. Many people are afraid that a dark color makes a space feel smaller. The truth is that dark colors, particularly blues, grays, cooler colorts - RECEDE in a room, potentially making it feel less closed in.... with the added benefit of not being too feminine. Please don't block your window! As a designer that's just weird, unless you plan on replacing it with a higher window and extending the existing finish to cover the whole. You will have all manner of undesirable stuff build up over time in a location that's difficult to clean. I disagree with leilynne. It looks too tight for an island... after all, how would you open the stove? Shrink or Expand Our Kitchen? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

As far as Eco friendly goes - there are so many amazing products to choose from, but you have to fairly experimental. Some of these new products have been time tested so claims of durability might need to be taken with a grain of salt. Prices are coming down for this stuff too. Last thing - beware of Green Washing. It's can be a little like fruit loops claiming nutrion value. Just read the labels. Most designers who are serious about sustainability are LEED accredited, whether they buy into the system or not.... oh yeah - any liscensed architect is going to have AIA (sans associate) after their name. Architects come in all shapes, sizes and prices. They do a little or as much as you like. I agree with the posts that give all the good reasons why one would be useful. There are two things I would add - an architect's job is to manage the entire process (if hired to do so) that includes monitoring construction. See post #2, an owner won't have to lose sleep over nails or screws - that's the architect's job. The second is that many many architects are hungry for work right now. I am sure you can find one that fits your budget. Steps to Building Our Own Home? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Chicago |

If want to be a decorator - building your network is fine. If you want to be a designer, get a degree and build a portfolio. A resume might get you in the door... if you've designed it well. But the only that's going to get you a job, is a portfolio. I don't know what the unemployment rate is for interior people, but architects are about 22%. Advice on How To Get a Design Internship? Really - finance to design?????? I get that you've got a creative streak, but have you spoken with designers - that's architects, interior designers or graphic designers? Rigor is required to be successful at design and you are constantly surrounded by people who want more more more because design is never done. You never finish - you just hit the deadline. Our 60 hour weeks are nothing to a 80-90 hour finance job, but we never make up the salary either. Take it from an architect - we don't get paid much and interior designers get paid much less. The above post was right, being broke gets old. All the headaches aside - the only thing in the world I want to do is design and work in a creative field. Are you willing to trade? Hardi-board of any type: shingles, panels, planks, even soffit pieces turned horizontally. You can be creative but the success depends on the contractor. The stuff is also high in recycled content. Before you put on new siding, check the waterproof sheathing underneath your siding. After 50 years, it could need a re-wrap. As for the roof, best low cost option is 20 year, energy star shingles.
