I've been wondering the same thing. We have been restoring a 1902 house (also in NC) for the past 10 months and we have 8 original fireplaces. Some of the tile I love, some I hate. My husband and I go back and forth on whether or not to keep it. I don't think ripping it out will hurt the integrity of the house. You could also try other options, like painting it!

I'm loving the subway tile with dark grout! We chose the same for 2 of our bathrooms and absolutely love it! So classic! :)

I'm not sure if this is as big as you're looking for, but I recently bought a couple of the rugby stripe storage bins from The Container Store and they are fantastic! Plus, you can't beat the price!! :) http://www.containerstore.com/shop/storage/binsBaskets/decorative?productId=10029538&N=71225
