LOVE the subway tile with dark grout! We did that in our guest bathroom with a black clawfoot tub and we think it looks killer! :)

Personally, I'm a huge fan of pink sofas. You can dress them up or down and there are so many color scheme options. I found mine at an estate sale and I love it!! And remember...everything's negotiable! (http://www.702parkproject.com/2013/08/19/the-perfect-pink-couch/)

I've been wondering the same thing. We have been restoring a 1902 house (also in NC) for the past 10 months and we have 8 original fireplaces. Some of the tile I love, some I hate. My husband and I go back and forth on whether or not to keep it. I don't think ripping it out will hurt the integrity of the house. You could also try other options, like painting it!
