I watched every episode on hulu (thanks to someone on AT suggesting it) and I thought it was great. He has a quote in one of the shows that stuck with me and I repeat it in my head when I'm struggling with my own kids eating habits. It was something along the lines of - "serve healthy food. If they don't like it...well...they'll get used to it" I did get caught up in the drama a little and I think I might have cried in the episode when the radio guy finally came around. It was entertaining and educational and eye opening.
I also have to say that I cooked an egg the way he showed David Letterman and it turned out great. I finally know how to fry an egg. Thanks Jamie! :)

My grandmother is the one I think of. She was very no-nonsense. She composted, grew her own, canned everything and was no sucker for clever marketing. For example when the "chip clip" hit the market she said "well that's nothing but a clothespin" and that's what she used to hold her chip bag closed.

I just love the sink. I'm glad to know the refinishing wasn't super expensive. Maybe I can find one used and refinish it. Inspired!

recently I made a big batch of turnover things filled with a finely chopped ham, onion and herb mixture. They took hours to make but they freeze great. Over the next several weeks I declared myself a genius every time I popped one out of the freezer and into the oven for twenty minutes. Eat it on a napkin and there is no mess to clean up. Although I did this for lunch on busy days I think they would work great for rushing out the door in the a.m. start them in the oven before your shower, while the coffee is brewing and grab it on the way out the door. Wrap in foil to keep warm if you must.
I'm out of them now but I will make another batch soon and experiment with the filling. Maybe I should post a link to the recipe.

I'm so glad I did this. Although I don't have pictures to share, I am super happy with the result. Week three was brutal but I was motivated by the Cure. I put off cleaning the floor til just yesterday. It took me two hours but it looks amazing.

Thanks! I will do this again. It was fun!

yes, change needs to happen on the govt level as it seemed the schools hands were tied. and I agree with what most everyone on here says. The main point is we all need to eat better and not rely on convenience foods. And teach our kids that. I am torn between not liking the "reality showiness" of it and thinking that it's brilliant they did that because that is what a lot of people are watching these days. People will watch it and argue about it and love to hate this person or that person. Did anyone see him on Letterman last night?

saeras said it best - it's a great place to start. though most of the people who read The Kitchn know this stuff already.

This is what I really think about feeding kids and families: When I had my first kid we were broke. And I had no idea how to cook. I started cooking a lot from scratch because I was under the impression that was more economical. I found the so called "poor people" store had way better prices and better produce. As my kids have gotten a little older I can honestly say that we eat healthier when money is tight. I will slice up a cucumber and serve it along side some plain noodles and a little bit of meat. a banana is a snack or a cut up apple. a slice of cheese. a quesadilla. a half cup of old fashioned popcorn makes a giant bowl to snack on as opposed to the bag of Dorito's that's eaten up fast. I also have always made their lunch for school - partly because I thought it was cheaper and partly because I'm a control freak and want to know what they're eating.
When money is flowing a little more freely, I find myself buying the frozen dinosaur chicken and the tator tots. And eating out more.
Recently my husband brought home a box of Cocoa Rice Crispies. The kids were elated. I was pissed. A few days go by and I run out of Cheerios. I give in and for a few days in a row I sent them to school after eating the sugary stuff. Nothing happened and I'm thinking maybe this stuff isn't so bad. Then my husband tells me that my son told him he was so starving in class BEFORE a.m. snack that he thought he was going to pass out. I ask did that ever happen before? "No." Coincidence? I think not.
Okay, I'm going to end my rant here. Even though I have A LOT more to say on this subject!

I am interested in watching this but I hope it doesn't get too preachy. That turns people off and then they just shrug and keep doing things the way they have been done for so long.

As a parent, I know it can be tricky to feed your kids healthy. I've found the best way is too restrict certain things and give in to other things on the weekends or occasionally. I also find with my kids that if I peel and clean a fresh raw carrot and hand it to them, they eat it. If I don't have chips, soda, etc in the house it is a lot easier to get them to try something healthy.

also question the additional granulated sugar. is that optional like adding cocoa or spices?

I had something similiar recenty. I saute some diced onions and a little adobo sauce. add some chopped cooked shrimp or chicken, cook briefly. Melt some cheese on a tortilla and add this adobo mixture to it. and you have an awesome fast quesadilla.

just finished my assignment of purging the fridge and pantry. After much consideration, I decided on Peter Gabriel - Security. It worked very nicely. I also have a kick-ass Pixies - Live in Amherst, MA. but my dog doesn't like Frank Black's screaming as much as I do and I didn't want him bugging me while I was finally doing the cure. :)

I have a can with a lid under the sink. I pour the grease in there and when it is full, I throw it in the garbage. I'm going to start saving my bacon grease to cook with from now on.

I've been making all different cookies for a long time using this method to rave reviews. To me, it's the only way. I once brought cookies to a pre-school meeting and actually was cornered by a pack of other mothers all demanding to know what my secret to fabulous cookies was. Did I let my eggs come to room temperature? Did I use some combination of butter and shortening? Later it dawned on me that my secret was hand mixing. But I am wondering if my homemade cake would turn out better with a mixer.

I love the way they look. hate the smell. found that out after successfully forcing them earlier in the season. now what? can I put the bulbs in the yard where they will come up again but I won't have to smell them?
